Evaluation of Podalic Support and Monitoring of Balance Control in Children with and without Dyslexia: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Background: The American Psychiatric Association has identified dyslexia as a neurobiological disorder. The aim of the study was to evaluate podalic support, balance control, and dyslexia’s effects on interpersonal relationships. Methods: Fifty-seven subjects were enrolled for this study. The subjects were divided into two groups. The experimental group was composed of children with diagnosis of dyslexia. The control group was composed of healthy subjects. Each subject underwent baropodometry and posturographi… Show more

“…Using the Romberg test position, all participants were administered a baropodometric and a stabilometric analysis ( 11 ). The parameters considered were: Surface Sx foot (left), Surface Dx foot (right) for the baropodometric analysis, and Sway Path Length (mm), Ellipse Surface Area (mm 2 ), x-mean (mm), y-mean (mm), and Average Speed of Movement (mm/s) for the stabilometric analysis ( 12 ).…”

“…The platform's sensors are 24 K gold; this permits high repeatability and reliability. [ 33 ] For posturography assessment, each participant performed the Romberg test with standardized positioning: feet placed side-by-side, forming an angle of 30° with both heels separated by 4 cm. [ 23 ] The following parameters of the statokinesigram were considered in open-eyes conditions: length of the sway path (SP) of the center of pressure (CoP) and ellipse surface area (ES).…”

“…Accordingly, musculoskeletal injury is accompanied by adaptive changes in the sensorimotor cortex (SM1) [ 11 ]. Additionally, the dyslexic children showed a flat-footed trend and an unstable balance compared with healthy subjects, indicating that cerebellar dysfunction in dyslexia limits the extent of motor control and coordination [ 12 ]. Although conventional foot strength training can enhance foot biomechanical function and related physical performance, it cannot effectively regulate the neural circuitry responsible for the neuromechanical regulation of the foot.…”
