Arab Journal of Plant Protection, 41(4): 427-436. https://doi.org/10.22268/AJPP-41.4.427436 This study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of some biopesticides (i.e. aqueous plant extracts and entomopathogenic microorganisms) against the tomato leafminer, Tuta absoluta Meyrick, as either an alternative or as integrated with chemical pesticides. The results obtained revealed that the aqueous plant extracts from Eucalyptus camaldulensis showed highest mortality (57.78%) against the larval stage, followed by Cupressus sempervirens (46.67%) seven days after treatment. Highest mortality was obtained by using 50,000 or 25,000 ppm extracts with no significant difference between the two concentrations. However, the 12.500 ppm concentration produced the lowest mortality rate. On the other hand, the larvae were more susceptible to the tested entomopathogenic microorganism. Nevertheless, the susceptibility and resistance varied in response to the pathogen species utilized in the test. The results obtained indicated that both Beauveria bassiana and Bacillus thuringiensis achieved maximum mortality rate (92.5 and 85.83 %, respectively) seven days after treatment, and the mortality rate for all bio-agents gradually increased with increasing concentration. The LC50 value of the above mentioned bioagents was 682340.58 and 995679.42 conidia/ml, respectively. Both positive and negative controls (Indoxacarb 15% and sterilized distilled water) displayed the highest and lowest mortality rate throughout the study. The identification of the bio-agents species was carried out via a DNAbased test. Various specific primers were designed for species identification with a product size ranging between 164 and 560 bp for further use in future agricultural research. Effects of phosphine and plant extracts on flower thrips mortality and the quality of cut flowers

Flower thrips represent a complex of significant quarantine species affecting the cut flower market in Colombia. The aim of this research was to evaluate postharvest treatments using phosphine in conjunction with a plant extract for thrips control and quality control of five cut flower species. Eight treatments were used: six employed a commercial dose of magnesium phosphide as a source of phosphine, one used a double dose and a control group without phosphine application. The first six treatments followed a bi-factorial structure, incorporating three exposure times and the addition of a chili-garlic extract. Thrips control efficacy was evaluated using the Schneider-Orelli index based on field-collected samples. Postharvest quality assessments were conducted on roses, carnations, alstroemerias, chrysanthemums, and hydrangeas over an 18-d period following treatment application. Differences in efficacy were observed between the two locations (the blocking factor). Discrepancies in phosphine efficacy may be related to the variations in populations collected from different crops and locations, both in the departments of Cundinamarca and Antioquia. Variations in magnesium phosphide concentration, both at the commercial dose of 3.4 g m-3 and double this amount (2X) did not produce significant differences in treatment efficacy or flower quality. The use of chili pepper and garlic extract applied by nebulization at 3°C combined with phosphine application also did not significantly affect thrips mortality efficacy. The factor most influencing efficacy improvement was exposure time, as longer time periods led to better thrips control. Furthermore, we found that longer exposure times did not affect visual quality or vase life, assessed through changes in color, physiopathies, and chlorophyll content.

Resumen IntroducciónLos invernaderos se clasifican por niveles alto, medio o bajo según las tecnologías que se le adapten, con la que se crean condiciones óptimas de radiación, temperatura, humedad y dióxido de carbono que permiten mejorar la producción agrícola, así como el desarrollo de organismos perjudiciales que se combaten aplicando plaguicidas, exponiendo a los jornaleros a sus vapores y residuos. MétodoSe determinó el daño genotóxico en muestras de células epiteliales de exfoliación bucal de los jornaleros a través del ensayo de micronúcleos, de 40 jornaleros expuestos a plaguicidas, 20 laboraron en invernaderos de baja tecnología y 20 en invernaderos de tecnología alta. ResultadosLos de baja tecnología mostraron resultados más altos de frecuencias para todas las anormalidades nucleares comparando con el grupo control, especialmente de cromatina condensada, picnosis, cariolisis y micronúcleos. Al calcular el riesgo, se midió las frecuencias de micronúcleos en razón de probabilidades (OR), para los jornaleros de invernaderos de alta tecnología el OR = 17.06 (95 % IC 3.4-83.7) y de baja tecnología OR = 50.66 (% IC 7.5-341.7).Nivel tecnológico de invernadero y riesgo para la salud de los jornaleros Nº 18, Vol. 9 (1) ConclusiónLos resultados indican que los jornaleros que laboran en invernaderos de baja tecnología muestran una mayor frecuencia de células con anormalidades nucleares, debido al efecto de condiciones laborales y exposición a los plaguicidas.
