Evaluation of pitting corrosion by dynamic speckle pattern analysis

Abstract: There is an increasing interest in non-destructive and real-time high-resolution approaches for corrosion studies in metals. In this paper, we propose the dynamic speckle pattern method as a low-cost, easy-to-implement, and quasi in-situ optical technique for the quantitative evaluation of pitting corrosion. This type of corrosion occurs in a specific area of a metallic structure and causes holes formation leading to structural failure. A Custom 450 stainless steel sample, placed in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution and a… Show more

“…Near the fusion boundary, the Cr eq /Ni eq ratio reaches 2:1 to 3:1, accelerating ferrite formation along the HAZ austenite grain boundary. The formed ferrite limits grain growth and reduces the sensitivity of HAZ to liquefaction cracks 29 .…”

“…This matrix is crucial in our study as it captures dynamic changes in the speckle patterns, reflecting variations in the polarization characteristics of the samples. In THSP, the rows (P) represent the selected points, while the columns (Q) track their intensity fluctuations across each reconstructed Mueller matrix image, indicating changes in intensity along the horizontal axis [4][5][6][7]. The THSP approach is key to deriving a range of numerical results, including but not limited to the co-occurrence matrix (COM), inertia moment, auto-correlation, as well as other significant parameters like contrast, polarimetric parameters, and roughness parameters [8,9].…”

“…Consequently, a holistic approach that combines multiple decomposition methods may be required to achieve a more complete grasp of the polarization information. In parallel, dynamic laser speckle analysis has emerged as a burgeoning technique [4][5][6][7]. By analyzing the laser speckle patterns, this approach delivers detailed information about the dynamic properties of a sample, offering a unique perspective on its condition and characteristics.…”

“…However, speckle formation may be considered as an advantageous phenomenon, because it contains valuable statistical information about the sample or process that generates the pattern. This positive feature of speckle pattern has led to the growing field of laser speckle analysis and comes along with numerous applications in life science, industry and technology [28][29][30][31][32][33][34][35] . Additionally, due to that speckle patterns contain bright regions surrounded by a connected network of dark sites, there are lots of local intensity gradients throughout the pattern, each can be considered as an optical trap site.…”
