Evaluation of phytochemical composition and metabolite profiling of macroalgae Caulerpa taxifolia and C. peltata from the Banda Aceh coast, Indonesia

The appearance of bacterial resistance and pathogenic infections makes efforts to find new drugs as natural bacterial agents continue. One of them is through the utilization of marine organisms such as seaweed. Some studies show the content of seaweed bioactive compounds has potential in the pharmacological field. This study aims to determine the type of secondary metabolite compounds and antibacterial activity of ethanol extract of Ulva intestinalis. Seaweed extraction using the maceration method for 3 x 24 hours and antibacterial activities were tested by disc diffusion method. The results showed that there were 5 types of secondary metabolite compounds in the extract, namely alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, saponins, and steroids. The antibacterial activity test of seaweed extract against Propionibacterium acnes and Aeromonas hydrophila bacteria in the concentration range of 50% to 100% showed a moderate inhibition zone diameter

Food packaging based on biodegradable polymers from seaweeds: a systematic review

As a result of its brief lifespan, food packaging contributes significantly to environmental contamination through the rapid accumulation of plastic in the environment. In order to mitigate these impacts and provide a food packaging solution that is more environmentally sustainable, researchers have created biodegradable and biobased polymers, which are presently being introduced to the market. The current state of research regarding the incorporation of seaweed into food packaging and active packaging is summarized in this study. In order to emphasize the benefits of polysaccharides and draw attention to the constraints of current research, this study also presents a synopsis of the effects of seaweed incorporation on a range of properties, including chemical, physical, thermal, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and mechanical attributes, in addition to the release of active compounds. A multitude of polysaccharides, including those found in seaweed, have the potential to enhance the antibacterial, thermal, and mechanical properties of these polymers, among other attributes. In addition to increasing hydrophilicity and mechanical properties such as tensile strength and elongation at break, they suggest employing it as active packaging. This is feasible as a result of the antioxidant properties of seaweed, which inhibit lipid oxidation and decrease toxic, mutagenic, or carcinogenic free radicals, thereby extending the nutritional value and shelf life of food. Certain varieties of seaweed have exhibited the capacity to impede the proliferation of bacteria classified as gram-positive and gram-negative. Thus, their prospective application as antimicrobial packaging is indicated.

Comprehensive analysis of harmful algal blooms in indonesia: from occurrence to impact

The occurrence and frequency of harmful algal blooms have become a significant problem in Indonesia's coastal waters since 1991. This article aims to thoroughly analyze the diversity of algal species involved in these harmful algal blooms (HABs). It highlights that some algae, such as toxic species, can produce dangerous toxins, while others, such as non-toxic algae, remain harmless. This article reviews research studies that describe the occurrence, frequency, and causative types of bloom events in several contaminated coastal regions of Indonesia. The blooms had many consequences for fisheries, the aquatic environment, the economy, and public health. Among the identified species, Pyrodinium bahamense var. compressum is known for its high toxicity. The most common taxa contributing to bloom tragedy are Chaetoceros, Noctiluca, and Skeletonema. The study recognizes that human-induced nutrient enrichment is a major and significant factor in triggering the bloom phenomena. The paper recommends various management strategies and further research initiatives to prevent and reduce the impacts of HABs in Indonesia.
