Evaluation of phytochemical components from ethyl acetate fraction of Vernonia calvoana using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis and its antioxidants activities

Abstract: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis and antioxidants activity of phytochemical constituents from ethyl acetate fraction of Vernonia calvoana (V.C) was evaluated. The fraction was subjected to GC-MS analysis using 5% diphenyl 95% dimethylpolysiloxane (30 m × 0.25 mm ID × 0.25 µm film thickness), the compounds were separated and identified by Turbo gold mass detector. The antioxidants activity was investigated employing the 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) and Ferric reducing antio… Show more

“…The retention times (RT) and relative percent (%) composition of identified components of both VGL and VGS are presented in Table 1. The compounds identified in V. glaberrima (VGL/VGS) are similar to previous GC-MS analysis on V. calvoana leaf ethyl acetate extract [18] and V. cinerea methanol extract [19]. Furthermore, fatty acid esters and aromatic derivatives were identified from the extract of V. arborea as reported [20].…”

“…The leaf ethyl acetate extract of V. calvoana harvested from the South-South Nigeria contains largely aromatic compounds such as ethyl benzene (22%) and 1,2,3-trimethyl benzene (12.5%). FRAP inhibitions on extract (1.98 μM) and ascorbic acid (2.0 μM) were more effective than on DPPH [49]. Although the inhibition on DPPH by plant extracts have been promising but chloroform extract of D. oliveri exudate showed rather poor (IC 50 of 15.5 μgmL −1 ) when compared to α-Tocopherol (0.25 μgmL −1 ) [50].…”
