Aim: This study investigated the flowability, setting time, pH, calcium release and bond strength of a MTA-based cement (MTA Fillapex ® ) compared to AH Plus and Sealapex. Materials and methods:For the flowability test, the ISO 6876:2001 specification was utilized and for the setting time test, the ASTM C266-03 specification was utilized. For the pH and calcium release measurements, 10 samples were prepared for each group and analyzed for several different periods. For the push-out test, dentin disks were distributed into three groups, according to the cement utilized and into three subgroups, according to the root third (n = 10). After obturation, the specimens underwent push-out testing. The data were compared statistically using a significance level of 5%. Results:The flowability of all materials was found to be similar (p > 0.05). The setting times were different among the groups tested (MTA Fillapex < Sealapex < AH Plus) (p < 0.05). At days 7 and 28, the MTA Fillapex presented the higher pH values (p < 0.05). At 24 hours and at 14 days, the calcium release of the MTA Fillapex was similar to that of Sealapex (p > 0.05). AH Plus presented the lowest pH and calcium release values (p < 0.05). In all root thirds, the adhesion to the dentin of the MTA Fillapex and Sealapex were significantly lower than that of AH Plus (p < 0.05). Conclusion:MTA Fillapex and Sealapex presented several similar properties and both were found to be different than AH Plus.Clinical significance: This study evaluated the physicochemical and mechanical properties of new MTA-based root canal cement, in order to use this scaler in root canal fillings. MTA Fillapex showed satisfactory properties for clinical use.

Materijali i metode: Pedeset i dva prednja maksilarna zuba podijeljena su u dvije skupine. U prvoj su korijenski kanali punjeni samo RSA-om, a u drugoj gutaperkom i RSA-om (n = 24 u svakoj skupini). Preostala četiri zuba služila su kao pozitivna i negativna kontrolna skupina. Eksperimentalna jedinica konstruirana je tako da je bila neprekidno spojena na izvor struje. Jedanpostotni kalijev jodid (KI) korišten je kao elektrolit te su zubi uronjeni u otopinu. Bakrene elektrode s provodnim kapacitetom od jednoga miliampera (mA) korištene su kao anode za zatvaranje strujnog kruga. Rezultati su se očitavali ukupno tri tjedna, jedanput na dan, digitalnim voltmetrom spojenim na eksperimentalnu jedinicu. Promjene u količini propuštanja u skupini procjenjivale su se svaki dan t-testom za ovisne uzorke, a razlika između dviju skupina analizirana je t-testom za neovisne uzorke. Rezultati: Razlika u apikalnom propuštanju između dviju eksperimentalnih skupina nije bila statistički značajna (p>0,05). U objema je zabilježeno značajno propuštanje u svim vremenskim intervalima (p<0,05). Zaključak: RoekoSeal Automix samostalno nije se razlikovao u propuštanju od gutaperke punjene njime. This is commonly achieved using a combination of gutta-percha as a core material and a root canal sealer. Root canal sealers are used to fill the minor interstices between the solid filling material and the wall of the canal. Unless a root canal sealer meets the necessary requirements, it may cause an increase in leakage which leads to endodontic failure (2). To date, there have been lasting attempts to develop better sealers, core materials and obturation techniques to increase the success of root canal treatment. Recently, RoekoSeal Automix (RSA, Roeko, Langenau, Germany), which is a polydimethylsiloxane-based sealer, has been introduced to endodontics. Penetrability of AH plus and MTA fillapex after endodontic treatment and retreatment: A confocal laser scanning microscopy study

The aim of the study was to assess the penetrability of two endodontic sealers (AH Plus and MTA Fillapex) into dentinal tubules, submitted to endodontic treatment and subsequently to endodontic retreatment. Thirty ex vivo incisors were prepared using ProTaper rotary system up to F3 instrument and divided in three groups according to the endodontic sealer used for root canal filling: AH Plus (AHP), MTA Fillapex (MTAF), and control group (CG) without using EDTA previously to the root canal filling. Rhodamine B dye (red) was incorporated to the sealers in order to provide the fluorescence which will enable confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) assessment. All specimens were filled with gutta-percha cones using the lateral compaction technique. The specimens were submitted to endodontic retreatment using ProTaper Retreatment system, re-prepared up to F5 instruments and filled with gutta-percha cones and the same sealer used during endodontic retreatment. Fluorescein dye (green) was incorporated to the sealer in order to distinguish from the first filling. The roots were sectioned 2 mm from the apex and assessed by CLSM. No difference was found between the two experimental groups (P > 0.05). On the other hand, in the control group the sealers were not capable to penetrate into dentinal tubules after endodontic treatment (P > 0.05). In retreatment cases, none of the sealers were able to penetrate into dentin tubules. It can be concluded that sealer penetrability is high during endodontic treatment. However, MTA Fillapex and AH Plus do not penetrate into dentinal tubules after endodontic retreatment.
