Evaluation of Physico-Mechanical Properties on Oil Extracted Ground Coffee Waste Reinforced Polyethylene Composite

Abstract: The current work discusses ground coffee waste (GCW) reinforced high-density polyethylene (HDPE) composite. GCW underwent two types of treatment (oil extraction, and oil extraction followed by mercerization). The composites were prepared using stacking HDPE film and GCW, followed by hot compression molding with different GCW particle loadings (5%, 10%, 15% and 20%). Particle loadings of 5% and 10% of the treated GCW composites exhibited the optimum level for this particular type of composite, whereby their mec… Show more

“…Moreover values obtained for D showed the same deceasing trend noting that, the difference in values between A1 and A2 is very small. This result can be attributed to presence of agglomrations that creat voids between the polymer matrix (PVA) and extract leading to easeier sample fracture 37 . Film A3 was composed of 75% LSE and 25% PVA, so it was thinner than the others and easy to rupture and consequently could not be measured by the mechanical tester.…”

“…Mechanical properties can enhance significantly with increased fiber length and fiber loading. This finding indicated that good adhesion between natural fibers and polymer matrices can be achieved by manipulating parameters, such as fiber length and fiber loading, to optimal tensile strength parameters (Kuan et al 2022). Optimization of tensile strength variable Typical optimization cube and ramp results are seen in Fig.…”

“…In addition, the consolidation of plantbased fibers with synthetic polymer offers good mechanical properties, high stiffness, low cost, and is lightweight. The wide application of natural fiber composite in the various manufacturing composite industries is a good demonstration of this affirmation due to their strength and durability (Kuan et al 2022). A composite is a mixture of two or more individual materials with notably different physical or chemical characteristics.…”

“…The findings showed that the composites' tensile characteristics improved with the incorporation of treated GCW filler, with oil‐extracted GCW displaying the highest tensile strength and elastic modulus. The SEM micrographs provided visual evidence of the improved fiber/matrix adhesion and better impregnation achieved through the treatment executed on GCW fillers 22 …”

“…The SEM micrographs provided visual evidence of the improved fiber/matrix adhesion and better impregnation achieved through the treatment executed on GCW fillers. 22 NaOH treatment was used to investigate the effect on the thermal-mechanical characteristics of composites filled with GCW, and it was noticed that NaOH treatment enhanced the surface roughness and increased the number of active sites for interaction between the reinforcement and matrix. This led to betterment in the tensile properties.…”
