Evaluation of Photodynamic Therapy near Functional Brain Tissue in Patients with Recurrent Brain Tumors

Abstract: PDT with LED balloon adapters (also tunable dye laser) has acceptable toxicity in brain tumor patients. Future studies using more effective photosensitizers could improve local recurrence control.

“…The gender ratio varied with pathology, such that the more malignant the greater the male predilection. This phenomenon has previously been identified [14]. The mean performance score (Karnofsky score) was 80 AE 15 for the whole group, but 19 of 96 had a score of 70 and 8 had a score of 50.…”

“…17 In addition, during experiments of photodynamic therapy in a canine model, 670-nm light at an energy density of 100 J/cm 2 administered directly into the brain parenchyma did not cause the temperature of brain tissue to rise by more than 18C. 18 NIR light appears to exert therapeutic effects in multiple ways. Primarily, the light appears to alter the activity of cytochrome c oxidase in mitochondria 13,14,19,20 improving energy metabolism and production, thus increasing energy available for cell and tissue repair.…”
