Evaluation of parasitological and molecular techniques for the diagnosis and assessment of cure of schistosomiasis mansoni in a low transmission area

Abstract: This study evaluated parasitological and molecular techniques for the diagnosis and assessment of cure of schistosomiasis mansoni. A population-based study was performed in 201 inhabitants from a low transmission locality named Pedra Preta, municipality of Montes Claros, state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Four stool samples were analysed using two techniques, the Kato-Katz® (KK) technique (18 slides) and the TF-Test®, to establish the infection rate. The positivity rate of 18 KK slides of four stool samples was 28… Show more

“…Due to its specificity, convenience, and low cost, the Kato-Katz technique (3) is the most commonly used tool in the parasitological survey for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminths in stool samples from individuals living in endemic areas (4) . However, in low-endemicity areas, where most individuals excrete fewer eggs in their feces, the limited sensitivity of the Kato-Katz technique compromises accurate estimation of the prevalence of the disease (2) (5) (6) (7) . Therefore, the development of improved diagnostic methodologies is essential for overcoming the limitations of the Kato-Katz technique.…”

“…In the present work, 2 slides of one stool sample were prepared for microscopic analysis, as currently recommended by the Brazilian Ministry of Health for schistosomiasis control. Siqueira et al 15 compared Kato-Katz and a molecular method for the diagnosis of schistosomiasis in a low transmission area. The authors performed Kato-Katz with 12 slides per sample as compared to 2 slides per sample.…”

“…A predominância da esquistossomose na população masculina foi observada neste estudo e corrobora com dados publicados por outros autores 13,14,15 . Embora ambos os sexos estejam submetidos às mesmas condições de saneamento básico, os homens geralmente estão ligados às atividades de pesca e agricultura, em contato direto com água, muitas vezes contaminada, sem nenhum tipo de proteção 16 .…”
