Evaluation of paclobutrazol application method on quality characteristics of ornamental pepper

Abstract: The effects of three paclobutrazol (PBZ) application methods on ornamental characteristics of two pepper cultivars (‘Biquinho Vermelha’ and ‘Bode Amarela’) were evaluated. Plant growth regulator at 10 μM PBZ was added at transplanting by drenching 250 mL PBZ solution on the pot substrate, foliar spray of 10 mL PBZ solution or by submerging seedlings root + substrate for 10 seconds in the PBZ solution. Control plants were treated with tap water applied directly on the substrate. Plant height, canopy compactness… Show more

“…The most common application methods of PBZ are foliar sprays and media drench. PBZ shows good results for both methods [32]; however, drenches act longer and provide uniform control of plant height with lower doses [33]. When PBZ is applied by foliar spray, the compound is poorly soluble in water and consequently little translocated in the phloem.…”

“…Therefore, in this study, PBZ was efficient in reducing chlorophyll degradation in leaves caused by ethylene. Most studies with PBZ are focused on the effects it causes on plant size, flowering and fruiting, as reported by França et al, (2017 and and Ribeiro et al, (2019b) in Capsicum spp. Whatever the positive effects that PBZ can provide to peppers, in terms of sensitivity to ethylene, it is extremely important to improve plant quality and increase shelf life.…”

“…Several authors describe the action of paclobutrazol (PBZ) in inhibiting ethylene synthesis in plants (Min & Bartholomew, 1996;Antunes, Ono & Sampaio, 2008;Ahmad, Dole & Whipker, 2015). PBZ is a regulator that blocks the biosynthesis of gibberellic acid, inhibiting plant growth and increasing chlorophyll in ornamental pepper leaves (França et al, 2017).…”

“…In pepper (Capsicum chinense cvs. 'Bode Amarela' and 'Biquin Vermelha'), plant height and total leaf number were unchanged after 10 µM PBZ foliar spray, whereas only plant height was retarded after soil drenched PBZ application (França et al, 2017). In the root zone, overall root and rhizome traits in cv.…”
