Evaluation of organochlorine pesticide residues in human serum from an urban and two rural populations in Portugal

Abstract: Organochlorine pesticide residues were measured in human serum from an urban and two rural populations in Portugal, in an attempt to evaluate the contamination level of Portuguese population. Serum levels of 12 residues were determined using a validated methodology that included gas chromatography-electron-capture detection. It was made an attempt to point out the differences of contamination between rural and urban populations; and among these, if it could be established a relation with sex and with age of in… Show more

“…The toxicological effects of OC contaminants create special problems for individuals who are exposed to them. Most exposure to these chemicals occur via occupation, dietary intake especially food of animal origin, water, ambient and indoor air, dust and soil (Cruz et al, 2003). Once they enter the biological system, these lipophilic compounds accumulate and even biomagnify their concentration along the food chain, especially in fatty food, and thus within the food chain bring on a high degree of contamination in high trophic organisms (Poon et al, 2005).…”

“…Estos pesticidas se bioacumulan en los tejidos lipídicos y se biomagnifican a través de la cadena alimenticia, lo cual implica un riesgo para la salud humana (Cruz et al, 2003). Además son ubicuos, persistentes y viajar grandes distancias (Iwata et al, 1994).…”

“…However, despite their prohibition in industrialized countries, they still exist in the environment and were described in the United Nations Environmental Program-UNEP-as persistent organic pollutants. Most OCPs were banned in Portugal in the late 1980s, although they still can be detected in sera taken from the general population [2], in plankton along the coast [3], and in surface and ground waters [4].…”
