Evaluation of oestrus synchronization and mass artificial insemination service of dairy cattle in Mizan Aman area, Bench Maji zone, South West Ethiopia

Abstract: The objectives of this study were to assess the hormonal response, conception rate, calving rate and perception of farmers towards the technology. From 220 cows and heifers brought by farmers for the services, 65% (143) that fulfilled the selection criteria were selected and injected with 2 ml of Cloprostenol. Data on the history of each heifers and cows, number of heifers and cows responsive to hormonal treatment, conception and calving rates were collected. The collected data were analyzed using descriptive … Show more

“…The breeding objectives of dairy producers in the study area agree with the report of Fissha and Deng (2021), who ranked milk first, meat second, asset third and dowry fourth in a mixed dairy production system. Fantahun and Admasu (2017) revealed food security, living assets, nutrition, economic sources, sociocultural merit and employment as friendly results for the current study. Kefena et al (2011) reported that milk production, the sustainability of the herd and draft purposes were high rented objectives.…”

“…The average conception rate recorded by this study was 38.1%. This result is comparable with the results from Destalem (2015) in Central Zone of Tigray, who indicated conception rate of 37.95%., and higher than the results from Adebebay et al (2013) in Bahirdar milk shed, Girmay et al (2015) in Wukro kilte Awulaelo district of Tigray region, Tegegn and Zelalem (2017) in Mizan Aman area of the South West Ethiopia and Tewodros et al (2015) in Fogera district of Amhara region, which indicated the average conception rates of about 13.2%, 32.17%, 24.69% and 31.29%, respectively. However, it is lower than the findings of Azage et al (2013) and Azage et al (2012) in Adigrat-Mekelle milk shed, Yeshimebet et al, (2017) in Debre Birhan area of Amhara region, Hamid (2012) in Siltie zone of Southern Ethiopia, and Debir (2016) in Sidama Zone of Southern Ethiopia, which indicated the average conception rates of about 60%, 57.7%, 50.9%, 48.1% and 58.4%, respectively.…”

“…The AI service and delivery of improved dairy genetics to smallholders could be improved by introducing hormonal oestrus synchronization and mass artificial insemination [13]. The effort to improve the dairy cattle crossbreeding/AI program through hormonal oestrus synchronization has been below expectation [14] due to factors related to inefficient AI service, poor infrastructure and farmers' awareness, although the synchronization technology has been successfully demonstrated through action research [10].…”
