Evaluation of occupant's adaptive thermal comfort behaviour in naturally ventilated courtyard houses

Abstract: PurposeIn vernacular buildings, many climatic and passive solutions have been used to create indoor thermal comfort. Seasonal occupant movement is an example of a traditional response to increasing thermal comfort. This article investigates the influence of these user behaviours on thermal comfort in courtyard houses.Design/methodology/approachParametric models of three different scenarios of courtyard houses are simulated. The courtyard houses are located in Shiraz, Iran, and share the same orientation and co… Show more

“…To this end, four window control scenarios were selected as variables for this study (Figure 2). This study employed a building geometry based on previous studies [42,43] (Figure 3). It should be noted that only the selected modeling inputs are taken from the references and other building configurations related to the purpose of this study are explained accordingly.…”

“…The average level of impact over shading in courtyards is 51% Taleb and Abumoeilak (2021) This study used the Envi-met simulation tool to determine the thermal performance of four urban spaces: U-shape, linear shape, central courtyard shape and a cluster of four U-shape spaces around a central courtyard space Results showed the thermal conditions of the examined four spaces vary. Amongst the examined cases, the fourth examined case provided the best thermal conditions with 41.03 8C temperature Pilechiha et al (2021) Using the adaptive thermal comfort model and three courtyard houses, this study investigated the impact of occupants' seasonal movement on achieving indoor thermal comfort in courtyard houses in Iran…”

“…An atrium is typically a large, multi-story, glass-roofed space that brings daylight into large buildings where sidelighting alone cannot penetrate enough [22]. Besides daylighting, atria can also provide other practical functions for a building, such as allowing natural ventilation to help maintain thermal comfort [23] or acting as a buffer space to reduce energy losses.…”
