“…These analyses examined the dietary supplement usage of 957 elderly people in the UK and found that 36 per cent of those living in the urban area, and 41 per cent of those living in the rural area took at least one dietary supplement. This is a similar level of consumption to that reported among elderly people in the recent National Diet and Nutrition Survey in the UK (Finch et al, 1998), in the USA (Stoehr et al, 1997;Dekker et al, 1996;Gray et al, 1996, Lee et al, 1991Stanek and Sempek, 1990) and Australia (Horwath and Worsley, 1989). The most commonly taken supplement was fish oil, followed by multivitamins, garlic tablets and vitamin C. The elderly in the UK seem to be consuming more fish oil, and less calcium than the elderly in the USA.…”

“…Dietary supplements are widely used by the elderly in the USA and Australia (Mares-Perlman et al, 1993;Bazzarre et al, 1991;Subar and Block, 1990; Dietary supplement use in later life 41 Stoehr et al, 1997;Dekker et al, 1996;Gray et al, 1996;Lee et al, 1991;Stanek and Sempek, 1990;Horwath and Worsley, 1989), but little is known about supplement usage among elderly people in the UK. The recent national diet and nutrition survey of adults aged 65 years and over has, however, found that approximately one-third of the free-living elderly in their survey took nonprescribed dietary supplements (Finch et al, 1998).…”

“…Anderson and Tobelmann (1995) reported that the average consumption of grain and whole grain products in their study sample of 4,000 was less than half that recommended by the Food Guide Pyramid. Lee et al (1991) reported that among 604 rural African American elderly, men consumed 3.4 and women 3.1 servings of breads and cereals. Foote and colleagues (2000) found that only 6.4 to 12.4% of healthy elderly participants in the southwestern US.…”

“…menos eficaz e mudança de comportamento alimentar (QUANDT et al, 2000;SHAHAR et al, 2001), especialmente entre homens acima de 75 anos de idade (CHARLTON, 1999). Apesar da constatação de que idosos que vivem sozinhos, sofram influências negativas na ingestão alimentar diária, principalmente entre homens de 80 anos (DONKIN et al, 1998), existem resultados contraditórios para esta faixa etária especialmente entre as mulheres (LEE et al, 1991).…”
