Abstract:Gill disease is a major threat to aquaculture of Atlantic salmon, with an unknown and likely underestimated contribution from cnidarians such as jellyfish and biofouling hydroids. To better understand the risk and thus enable mitigation, technology for the certain identification of cnidarian-related gill damage is needed. We used the hydroid Ectopleura larynx in a case study to determine whether the exposure of salmon to nematocyst-bearing hydrozoans can be deducted via non-destructive PCR-based methods.
