Evaluation of noninvasive blood pressure recording by photoplethysmography in clinical studies using angiotensin challenges

Abstract: Aims Continuous noninvasive blood pressure measurement by photoplethysmography has been regularly used in the experimental paradigm of angiotensin challenges, applied to the phase I clinical testing of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors and angiotensin receptor antagonists. This work aims to evaluate the performance of this measurement method, in terms of reliability, reproducibility and dependence on technical settings. Methods Data have been gathered from 13 clinical studies on antihypertensive drugs, … Show more

“…However, the results with stratification according to the different methods appear to be consistent with the previous observations, reported by this laboratory [30] or others [1,7,8,10,14,20,28], which suggest a comparability between the ABP measured using Finapres and intra-arterial catheters (see table 3). Nonetheless, there was a trend (p = 0.071) that DBP could be differently diagnosed using Finapres or intra-arterial catheters between the different age groups.…”

“…First, the peripheral compliance index, which decreases with chronological age ( 145 ), can be estimated from pulse pressure and PPG pulse wave amplitude ( 119 , 145 , 171 ). Second, the volume-clamp method can be used to measure BP continuously ( 156 , 208 ). This approach is used by several commercially available devices ( 213 ).…”
