Evaluation of multiple-atlas-based strategies for segmentation of the thyroid gland in head and neck CT images for IMRT

Abstract: Segmenting the thyroid gland in head and neck CT images is of vital clinical significance in designing intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) treatment plans. In this work, we evaluate and compare several multiple-atlas-based methods to segment this structure. Using the most robust method, we generate automatic segmentations for the thyroid gland and study their clinical applicability. The various methods we evaluate range from selecting one single atlas based on one of three similarity measures, to comb… Show more

“…However, individual institutions may have significant difficulty systematically evaluating competing auto-segmentation platforms, as evaluation of registration and segmentation typically requires substantial effort for multi-ROI segmentation assessment [9,10]. Consequently, we surmised that there exists an unmet need for an open-source, web-based software solution for comparison of auto-segmented ROIs with reference manually segmented ROIs.…”

“…There has been increasing development of tools for measuring thyroid volume, which are quick and accurate. [27,28] Improved segmentation will help clinicians and future studies analyse goitre volume.…”

“…However, recently, multi-atlas segmentation has been shown to minimize the effects of variability and improve segmentation accuracy, especially for low-contrast anatomy such as the brachial plexus (Chen et al , 2012; Klein et al , 2008; Yang et al , 2013; Sjoberg et al , 2013; Kirisli et al , 2010; Isgum et al , 2009). Multi-atlas segmentation exploits contoured atlas data for the auto-segmentation of new patient images.…”
