Anaerobic digestion is traditionally used for treating organic materials. This allows the valorization of biogas and recycling of nutrients thanks to the land application of digestates. However, although this technology offers a multitude of advantages, it is still far from playing a relevant role in the energy market and from having significant participation in decarbonizing the economy. Biogas can be submitted to upgrading processes to reach methane content close to that of natural gas and therefore be compatible with many of its industrial applications. However, the high installation and operating costs of these treatment plants are the main constraints for the application of this technology in many countries. There is an urgent need of increasing reactor productivity, biogas yields, and operating at greater throughput without compromising digestion stability. Working at organic solid contents greater than 20% and enhancing hydrolysis and biogas yields to allow retention times to be around 15 days would lead to a significant decrease in reactor volume and therefore in initial capital investments. Anaerobic digestion should be considered as one of the key components in a new economy model characterized by an increase in the degree of circularity. The present manuscript reviews the digestion process analyzing the main parameters associated with digestion performance. The novelty of this manuscript is based on the link established between operating reactor conditions, optimizing treatment capacity, and reducing operating costs that would lead to unlocking the potential of biogas to promote bioenergy production, sustainable agronomic practices, and the integration of this technology into the energy grid.

The excessive use of agricultural soils and the reduction in their organic matter, following circular economy and environmental sustainability concepts, determined a strong attention in considering composting as a preferred method for municipalities and industries to recycle organic by-products. Microorganisms degrade organic matter for producing CO2, water and energy, originating stable humus named compost. The current study analyzed the chemical composition of a cow slurry on-farm digestate and a more stabilized digestate-derived compost (DdC), along with their phytotoxic, genotoxic and antifungal activities. The chemical analysis showed that digestate cannot be an ideal amendment due to some non-acceptable characteristics. Biological assays showed that the digestate had phytotoxicity on the tested plants, whereas DdC did not induce a phytotoxic effect in both plants at the lowest dilution; hence, the latter was considered in subsequent analyses. The digestate and DdC induced significant antifungal activity against some tested fungi. DdC did not show genotoxic effect on Vicia faba using a micronuclei test. Soil treated with DdC (5 and 10%) induced damping-off suppression caused by Fusarium solani in tomato plants. The eco-physiological data indicated that DdC at 5–10% could increase the growth of tomato plants. In conclusion, DdC is eligible as a soil amendment and to strengthen the natural soil suppressiveness against F. solani.

Aitolo-Akarnania prefecture, western Greece, is an area with strong earthquakes and large active fault systems. The most, the second half of the 20th century was characterized for the world community by the aggravation of the environmental problem. Anthropogenic pollution of the environment with the growth of industrial and agricultural production, the growth of cities, the size of the population, the volume of their consumption clearly indicates that the world community is on the brink of an abyss. The destruction of forests, pollution of water bodies, degradation of soil, flora and fauna, the emergence of new diseases clearly shows that if urgent and drastic measures are not taken to save the environment, the life of future generations is problematic. In Russia, as in other countries of the world, the amount of solid household waste has been sharply increasing lately. Therefore, their processing and disposal is becoming an increasingly urgent problem that requires the adoption of complex solutions. At the same time, overcrowded and smoking landfills, as well as formed unauthorized landfills are the main sources of environmental pollution. Landfills of solid municipal waste not only cause an epidemiological hazard, but due to the anaerobic decomposition of organic waste, causing the formation of explosive biogas, become a powerful source of biological pollution. Biogas generated at MSW landfills in the process of decomposition has a toxic effect on living organisms, contributes to the outbreak of fires, and is a source of unpleasant odors. This problem must be solved by introducing a degassing system at municipal solid waste landfills already at the stage of their operation.
