Evaluation of MSW Compost and Digestate Mixtures for a Circular Economy Application

Abstract: In order to obtain a product with agronomic characteristics and biological stability consistent with the EU fertilizer decree for the market of EU fertilising products three different mixtures obtained from sludge digestate from municipal wastewater treatment plant, fresh compost and mature compost have been studied and characterized. For the experimental activity, the raw samples and three mixing ones were collected for the analytical characterization. The biological stability was then assessed for all sample… Show more

“…There are several manuscripts available in the literature reporting the relevant role that anaerobic digestion should exert in a circular economy model, considering the capability of this process for producing energy from organics, manures, and a great diversity of agronomic wastes [10][11][12][13]. Table 1 lists the products associated with the role of anaerobic digestion in the circular economy based on scientific literature.…”

“…On the other side, digestate samples contained a higher number of E. coli , confirming their need to be subjected to further maturation because they did not respond to the main characteristics of compost quality requirements proposed in national (L.D. 75/2010) and international (EU fertilizer decree for CE marked fertilizers, 1009/2019) regulations [ 33 ].…”

“…A landfill is a natural or artificial earth quarry, reaching an area of several hectares with a depth of 10-20 m, located above dense waterproof layers of earth and having a multilayer protective screen made of artificial and natural materials [7]. Drainage pipes are laid along the entire perimeter of the landfill to bring the generated wastewater and landfill gas (biogas) to the surface.…”
