Evaluation of mobile phone radiation-induced structural changes of rat brain with emphasis on the possible protective role of pomegranate peel extract

Abstract: Background:The study aims to evaluate the impact of the antioxidant rich pomegranate fruit grown in Taif on the histological and immunohistochemical changes in the cerebral and cerebellar cortex after different levels of mobile exposure. Materials and Methods: Thirty adult male rats were divided into group I, II, III; IV, and group V. Group I was control and group II rats were exposed to 900 MHz and in group III the rats are exposed to 1800 MHz for two months. Group IV the rats were exposed to 900 MHz concomit… Show more

“…These changes were in the nerve cells especially also in the cerebral and cerebellar cortices. These changes were more pronounced in those exposed to 1800 MHz compared to the others [19]. Singh et al determined the proteome profile in rat hippocampus exposed to 3G (1964.7 MHz) mobile phone radiation for 20 weeks.…”

“…The cerebral and cerebellar cortices of the rats exposed to mobile phone radiation showed degenerative changes, especially in neurons. This study concluded that pomegranate extract can improve histopathological changes induced by cellular electromagnetic radiation (Belal et al, 2020 ). Kandeil et al conducted research on the protective effect of pomegranate peel extract on titanium dioxide nanoparticles.…”

“…With higher EMR (1800MHZ) animals showed more severe degeneration in nerve cells, vacuolated neuropil in all layers and congestion in many blood vessels. 23 Congestion in the vessels and RBCs extravasation in a myocardial study, may be due to free radical generation with EMF. 24 In recovery groups (III) pyramidal or granular cells showed approximately normal appearance this can be supported by persistent appearance of newborn cortical neurons after stroke.…”
