Evaluation of microbial contamination of canine plasma eyedropper bottles following clinical use in canine patients

Abstract: Novelia bottles may decrease contamination of plasma eye drops used clinically. However, while microbial contamination of plasma bottles was documented, no clinically relevant complications were observed. This study supports safe use of plasma eye drops for up to 2 weeks when refrigerated and dispensed from either Novelia or standard eyedropper bottles.

“…In a study performed by Strauss and colleagues, refrigerated plasma eye drops in both standardized eyedropper bottles and Novelia (multi-dose eyedropper) were safe to use for up to two weeks in dogs with ulcerative keratitis. 20 Given these findings, it is possible that ca-IRAP expiration date can be extended for a longer period if the ca-IRAP sample is kept frozen until use. The ES, eq-IRAP and ca-IRAP used in our study were only stored in the -80C freezer for one week (ca-IRAP) to two weeks (ES and eq-IRAP).…”

“…Based on these studies, it can be inferred that the actuation force of the Novelia® vial is less than 25 N. Another study demonstrated that the Novelia® container maintains the physicochemical and microbiological stability of the drug on par with amber glass containers and classic high-density polyethylene containers (47). Furthermore, Novelia® vials can reduce the risk of contamination of eye drops used in clinical settings, and safe use of such eye drops is possible for up to two weeks (48).…”
