Evaluation of Methods to Minimize Pain in Newborns during Capillary Blood Sampling for Screening: A Randomized Clinical Trial

Abstract: Aim: The aim of the study was to assess the severity of pain experienced by a newborn during a heel puncture for screening using the Newborn Pain Scale (NIPS), measure the heart rate and compare the effectiveness of non-pharmacological methods of pain control. Design: Randomized clinical trial. No experimental factors. The test was performed during routine screening. Surroundings: Provincial Specialist Hospital in Olsztyn. Patients/Participants: Pain was assessed in 90 full-term newborns. The newborns were roo… Show more

“…Despite the effectiveness of non-pharmacological methods for procedural pain management in infants, being evident [ 109 ], we know precious little about the actual methods the NICU infant parents use. Campbell-Yeo et al (2011) believed that such strategies are mostly used by nurses to hold on to NICU authority over infant caregiving, despite parents wishing to be more engaged in comforting their infants [ 85 ].…”

“…This is consistent with the results of many studies on improving the physiological status of newborns when non-nutritive sucking and the mother’s voice are used alone [ 29 31 ]. A randomized clinical trial indicated that the non-nutritive sucking applied during heel puncture resulted in effective pain management in newborns and the relationship between heart rate variability and the severity of pain was confirmed [ 32 ].…”

“…Furthermore, specific guidance on the management of biosamples in pediatrics is not available. The creation of the checklist presented in this work fills a current need for sponsors and researchers to implement ad hoc procedures for specimen handling in pediatric research and their possible successful implementation in clinical studies 47–49 . In fact, such a checklist was built aggregating all available existing resources and using expert opinion to fill in any gap.…”
