Evaluation of Mechanical and Water Absorption Properties of Alkaline-Treated Sawdust-Reinforced Polypropylene Composite

Abstract: Sawdust is a natural composite obtained from natural resources such as shrubs and trees and in a large amount from the wood industry as a waste. This study aimed to evaluate the mechanical and water absorption properties of alkaline-treated wood sawdust-reinforced polypropylene composite. The composites were manufactured by the melt-mixing method followed by compression molding with amounts of wood sawdust ranging from 10, 20, 30, and 40 to 50 wt. % by volume. The produced composites were characterized for the… Show more

“…The strength of treated NaOH filament is lower by 14.11% (22.03 MPa) than r-PP at 25.67 MPa, which is similar to fidnings by Ferede et al [ 62 ] when they studied the properties of wood dust/PP composite. They stated that this decreasing strength of NaOH treated fiber composite is possibly due to aggregation of the wood dust or insufficient hydrogen bonding between the r-PP and the wood fibre.…”

“…The maximum strength was achieved at 15 wt.% with a value of 89.8 MPa which is 10% higher than the matrix material. These findings are in good agreement with those obtained by other researchers [6,13]. The increase in mechanical properties may be attributed to the reduced porosity and improved spread of the resin, which results in strong interfacial bonding between the reinforcement and the resin matrix.…”

“…The compression moulding method was used for producing the particulate polymer composites with weight percentage of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% under varying compression loads of 5 kN, 10 kN, 15 kN and 20 kN with 20 minutes curing time for all loads [2]. The composition of epoxy resin, hardener and bone powder mixture will play a critical role in determining the properties of the final composite material [6]. To ensure consistency between different samples, it is important to carefully ICFMET-2023 Journal of Physics: Conference Series 2604 (2023) 012004…”

“…Many studies have been carried out in search of a combination of natural composite with synthetic material, with both mechanical and physical properties [2]. This thing especially applies to industry processing particles/powder food, briquettes biomass, paving blocks, and board particles [3,4]. In Aceh a lot there is an industry processing wood, especially wood teak.…”
