Evaluation of Masticatory Muscle Function Using Digital versus Traditional Techniques for Mockup Fabrication: A Controlled Prospective Study

Abstract: Background: the aim of this longitudinal prospective study was to analyze the effect of digital and traditional mockup on masticatory muscle activity in patients with teeth wear, rehabilitated with an increase of occlusal vertical dimension. Subjects and Methods: a sample of 22 adult patients who were about to receive a prosthetic rehabilitation was divided into a study group (3M; 9F; mean age 42 ± 0.8 years), treated using the digital mockup; and a control group (2M; 8F; mean age 37 ± 0.5 years), treated usin… Show more

“…The significant increased mean values of POC MM that were obtained in rESWT group might indicate a low asymmetry between the right and left muscle pairs and balanced contractile activity [59]. Indeed, a measure of the predominance of the right or left masseter in the posterior teeth contacts provide an index of performance symmetry [46]. The improvement in POC MM of the rESWT group at the end of treatment could justify the improvements at 24 weeks in the significant difference in anterior-posterior BAR between the two groups.…”

“…The sEMG was performed with four surface electrodes with clip connection (41.5 × 24.8 × 14 mm mother electrode-Ø 16 × 12 mm satellite electrode, FREE1000 BTS Bioengineering, Milano, Italy) using bipolar surface electrodes (diameter, 0.8 cm; interelectrode distance, 2 cm; disposable, surface Ag/AgCl Ambu Neuroline 720 electrodes (Ambu, Neuroline, Ballerup, Denmark) with 16 bit resolution, 1 kHz acquisition frequency, and a IEEE 802.15.4 wireless data transmission (probes-USB receiver) [27,[39][40][41][42][43]. As shown in Figure 1, we have elaborated the following indices [32,[44][45][46]:…”

“…But in each group, half of patients were randomly assigned for the surface electromyography controlling procedure during denture construction try-in with further denture occlusal correction for reaching the most balanced correspondence between left and right temporal and masticatory muscles. Surface electromyography evaluation was provided with the use of a Teethan device (BTS S.p.A., Garbagnate Milanese, Italy) due to the previously described protocol with analysis of such targeted parameters as the symmetry of contraction within homological pair of masticatory muscles (POC-index), asymmetry between left and right sides (ASIM-index), and mandibular torsion index (TORS-index) [14].…”

“…In complex dental treatments, early virtual planning is of great importance because it minimises the probability of errors and increases the predictability of the achieved result [1,2]. Digital technologies create more opportunities for such planning [3][4][5] because they can be applied at the early stages of initial examination to develop simultaneous planning of all stages of treatment until the final restoration [6][7][8][9].…”
