Can Gio Mangrove Biosphere Reserve provide many ecosystem services, such as provisioning, regulating, cultural, and supporting services for the urban areas as well as wildlife of suburban areas in Ho Chi Minh City and the nearby ecosystems. Therefore, it is important to monitor and evaluate the change of mangrove forest cover in the long term. In this study, the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index -NDVI at 10 m resolution from 2015 to 2023 of Can Gio was obtained from the Copernicus Sentinel-2 database using Google Earth Engine -GEE. Subsequently, NDVIs statistic were computed by R to assess the slope of NDVI change with p-value significance in Can Gio. The results indicated that NDVI values typically range from -0.4 to +0.8 and vary annually. It is evident that NDVIs values from 2015 to 2020 are marginally higher than those recorded between 2021 and 2023. The degradation in average NDVI from 2015 to 2023 was rationally deducible either from the downsizing of mangrove forest areas or the degradation of the mangrove forest. However, the annual NDVI statistic revealed there were areas with an acceleration of NDVI in comparison with the destruction of NDVI areas from 2015 to 2023. Linear regression effectively models continuous processes like deposition or erosion. However, to evaluate other factors such as discrete human-made or sporadic impacts, alternative statistical models should be considered.

Long-Term Wetland Monitoring Using the Landsat Archive: A Review

Wetlands, which provide multiple functions and ecosystem services, have decreased and been degraded worldwide for several decades due to human activities and climate change. Managers and scientists need tools to characterize and monitor wetland areas, structure, and functions in the long term and at regional and global scales and assess the effects of planning policies on their conservation status. The Landsat earth observation program has collected satellite images since 1972, which makes it the longest global earth observation record with respect to remote sensing. In this review, we describe how Landsat data have been used for long-term (≥20 years) wetland monitoring. A total of 351 articles were analyzed based on 5 topics and 22 attributes that address long-term wetland monitoring and Landsat data analysis issues. Results showed that (1) the open access Landsat archive successfully highlights changes in wetland areas, structure, and functions worldwide; (2) recent progress in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning opens new prospects for analyzing the Landsat archive; (3) most unexplored wetlands can be investigated using the Landsat archive; (4) new cloud-computing tools enable dense Landsat times-series to be processed over large areas. We recommend that future studies focus on changes in wetland functions using AI methods along with cloud computing. This review did not include reports and articles that do not mention the use of Landsat imagery.

Wetlands provide unique habitat functions that benefit society by provisioning food, recreation, and ecosystem sustainability. Warfare affects the habitats of wetland‐dependent reptiles, amphibians, and birds in both positive and negative ways, and opportunities exist to improve the management of wildlife habitat using a warfare ecology framework. Recent events in Ukraine highlight these relationships and provide stimulus to further consider the implications of current events for natural resources. In response, this commentary highlights both degradational and positive impacts of warfare on wetland fauna during the cyclical preparation, active conflict, and recovery phases. For example, the active conflict phase often initiates ecological disturbance regimes that couple large‐scale landscape alteration with the release of chemicals and other materials into wetlands, leading to reduced reproductive potential and population declines in wetland‐dependent species (e.g., amphibians, waterfowl) along with decreased overall wetland biodiversity and habitat quality. In contrast, wetland‐dependent wildlife can benefit from (1) conservation activities occurring on military installations maintained to support training activities and (2) restoration efforts initiated after the cessation of combat. For example, many threatened and endangered reptiles and amphibians find refugia on military lands in the USA and internationally, and international protections for wetland resources (including the Ramsar Convention) have been established to promote their sustainability and wise use. Additional research is needed to improve the protection of valuable wetland resources by further enhancing ongoing conservation and planning efforts and improving strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of warfare on wetland dependent species throughout each phase of the warfare ecology cycle.
