“…From the literature, most of the TiB 2 coatings reported display the patterns of the hexagonal phase with a preferred (001) orientation 8,9) and the (001) oriented coatings yield the highest hardness.…”

“…During machining the built-up material detaches periodically with a piece of the tool or the coating thus accelerates a damage process of the tool and causes a decrease in surface roughness of the workpiece. The lowered friction coefficient of boron-and titanium-rich materials comes from oxidation reactions which are activated thermally (by friction) during machining in humidity environment [7,10]. In the case of boron present on the friction contact, H3BO3 is the main product of the oxidation reaction, conducted in low temperatures (<100C).…”

“…In the case of alumina composites, the addition of titanium diboride is limited up to 10% vol. At higher TiB2 contents, a decreased toughness of these composites is observed [7]. Composites containing less than 10% of titanium diboride are characterized by increased hardness but the content of this phase is insufficient to decrease the friction coefficient of the composite effectively.…”

“…Both ceramics are extremely hard, with high melting temperatures, and extensive usage as tribological coatings. Recent studies show that both are optimal coatings for use opposite aluminum [15,16]. For example, TiC coatings on graphite baffles withstand reaction with molten aluminum longer than most refractory materials [17].…”
