Evaluation of low impact development and best management practices on peak flow reduction using SWMM

Abstract: Rapid urbanisation has caused an increased in peak discharge that conventional drainage systems cannot adequately handle. Low Impact Development (LID) practices are becoming a new approach in helping to better mimic the pre-development discharges. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of LID and Best Management Practices (BMP) under different rainfall conditions. Vegetative swale and detention pond were selected to represent LID and BMP. Simulations of four main scenarios namely, base case, LID, BMP, a… Show more

“…Trees and shrubs have shown an effective performance in heavy metal uptake and in removing nitrate and phosphate through bioretention systems [79]. In recent years, a handful of developed countries having been using eco-friendly methods for removing contaminants and heavy metals from stormwater runoff [80]. This suggests that LID may be a potential method for in-situ CWW treatment that can remove pollution from wastewater and prepare recycled water for the same use at the same center.…”

“…In recent years, many Chinese cities have become increasingly waterlogged during the rainy seasons due to climate changes and accelerated urbanization [1,2], with some old low-terrain residential quarters being serious cases. Heavy rains result in small ponds in these areas, which poses a challenge for the residents' life.…”
