Evaluation of LNAPL Behavior in Water Table Inter-Fluctuate Zone under Groundwater Drawdown Condition

Abstract: We investigate the movement of LNAPL (light non-aqueous phase liquid) into and out of monitoring wells in an immediate-scale experimental cell. Aquifer material grain size and LNAPL viscosity are two factors that are varied in three experiments involving lowering and rising water levels. There are six monitoring wells at varying distances from a LNAPL injection point and a water pumping well. We established steady water flow through the aquifer materials prior to LNAPL injection. Water pumping lowered the wate… Show more

“…Xin investigated the effect of two types of water level fluctuations (constant water level and water level fluctuation of 20 cm every 10 days) on the nitrate-nitrogen concentration in groundwater. Azimi et al (2020) studied the variation in LNAPL thickness during rises and falls in the water level. Farnsworth et al (2012) studied the effect of transient dissolved oxygen (DO) on manganese oxidation during water level fluctuations.…”

“…Petroleum and its derivatives are the most common LNAPL and its underground contamination represents a recurring problem in industrialized spots and in oil producing factories. In fact, it can affect the environmental matrixes in the form of either vapor phase in soil pore spaces, or liquid residual LNAPL, or free-phase LNAPL in the water-unsaturated zone, or, finally, as entrapped LNAPL globules above and below the water table (ASTM E2531-06 2014; Azimi et al 2020). When the LNAPL contamination state of an area reaches relevant levels, it is common to find a thickness of free-phase supernatant product between groundwater and air.…”
