“…Women who already followed an active lifestyle before pregnancy should be encouraged to continue an exercise program approved for pregnancy. This recommendation is supported by the observation of Garcia-Patterson et al [46] on 20 GDM women. Fasting and 1-hour postprandial blood glucose values were measured on control days, when the participants had to sit quietly after breakfast, and also on intervention days, when the women went for a walk of about 2.5 km.…”

“…Avery and Walker (2001) reported that a single 30-minute bout of exercise on a cycle ergometer at 35% or 55% of maximum oxygen consumption (VO 2 max ) improved glucose excursion compared with rest in women with GDM (Avery & Walker, 2001). GarciaPatterson et al found similar results, showing that light postprandial walking at 2.5 km/h decreased glucose excursion in GDM women (Garcia-Patterson et al, 2001). Lesser et al (1996) determined the effects of a single bout of stationary cycling for 30 minutes at 60% VO 2 max , comparing six GDM women to five normal glycemic pregnant women.…”

“…11 Randomized trials among women with GDM have demonstrated that physical activity reduces glucose levels. 12,13 Some previous observational studies have found that physical activity before pregnancy reduces risk for GDM, 14,15 although none has evaluated associations with abnormal glucose tolerance.…”
