Evaluation of lean practices in warehouses: an analysis of Brazilian reality

Abstract: PurposeThis article aims to investigate the most applied lean warehouse practices in Brazilian warehouses.Design/methodology/approachTo perform this research, three phases were conducted: a literature review, a multiple case study, and an analysis of lean warehouses practices implementation by an engineering committee. “…Process flow: Warehouse will have different processes and each process will have a defined flow. For any warehouse that needs to be optimized, first, the warehouse process needs to be studied for the implementation of lean practices (Pereira et al , 2021). If the process is lean, then other allied things will streamline and this will ensure that most of the warehouse operations are optimized (Kłodawski et al , 2017).…”

“…It is worth highlighting that the literature presents relevant studies that used TOPSIS method in the logistical context can be highlighted: Moon et al (2015) analyzed the competitiveness of six transport routes between Korea and Europe evaluating criteria such as total transport distance, total transport time, total transport cost, service level and transport security; Pereira et al (2020) analyzed lean warehousing practices performed in Brazilian companies context, in order to assess the most and the less adopted, in an exploratory character.…”

“…The dynamic market evolution has forced many firms to adapt to various SC initiatives to try to enhance efficiency (Sodhi et al , 2012). It is argued that risks and uncertainties have been emanated by the adoption of contemporary business strategies to gain SC efficiencies, such as the implementation of lean operation and outsourcing, the increasing trend of globalization, reduction in the supply base, inventory reduction to the bare minimum, emphasizing more centralized distribution and production (Revilla and Saenz, 2017; Blackhurst et al , 2011; Jüttner et al , 2003; Pereira et al , 2020; Shi et al , 2019). The lean paradigm focuses on the “fat” reduction or elimination.…”
