This chapter details the application of LIBS in a number of environmental areas of research such as carbon sequestration and climate change. LIBS has also been shown to be useful in other high resolution environmental applications for example, elemental mapping and detection of metals in plant materials. LIBS has also been used in phytoremediation applications. Other biological research involves a detailed understanding of wood chemistry response to precipitation variations and also to forest fires. A cross-section of Mountain pine (pinceae Pinus pungen Lamb.) was scanned using a translational stage to determine the differences in the chemical features both before and after a fire event. Consequently, by monitoring the elemental composition pattern of a tree and by looking for abrupt changes, one can reconstruct the disturbance history of a tree and a forest. Lastly we have shown that multivariate analysis of the LIBS data is necessary to standardize the analysis and correlate to other standard laboratory techniques. LIBS along with multivariate statistical analysis makes it a very powerful technology that can be transferred from laboratory to field applications with ease.

Dois fragmentos de pinturas rupestres pertencentes a dois sítios arqueológicos brasileiros, sendo um no estado do Piauí (Sítio Toca da Extrema II) e outro no estado do Rio Grande do Norte (Sítio arqueológico Xique-Xique), foram analisados por LIBS (espectroscopia de emissão em plasma induzido por laser). Um instrumento construído no laboratório (laser Nd:YAG, 1064 nm, 5,2 ns), contendo um policromador echelle, foi empregado para a aquisição dos espectros. Estudos preliminares envolvendo uma pintura realizada sobre uma tela de madeira contendo diferentes camadas de material foram realizados para determinar a melhor energia do pulso de laser. Para cada fragmento de pintura, foram realizados 8 pulsos sucessivos em 16 locações diferentes, sendo 8 locações sobre a pintura e 8 sobre o substrato. Neste trabalho, foi demonstrado que a utilização de técnicas multivariadas é indispensável devido à grande complexidade dos espectros obtidos durante estudo de profundidade de amostras arqueológicas.Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was employed in the study of two fragments of prehistoric rock wall paintings found at two Brazilian sites: in Piauí State (Toca Extrema II) and in Rio Grande do Norte State (Xique-Xique). A time-resolved echelle based LIBS system assembled in the laboratory (laser Nd:YAG, 1064 nm, 5.2 ns) was employed for spectral acquisition. Preliminary depth profile studies were carried out in surrogate samples of a multilayer painting on wood to determine the best energy for the laser pulse. For each fragment of wall painting, the depth profile composition was investigated by firing 8 successive laser shots at each of 16 locations (8 in the area of pigment and 8 in the area of substrate). It is demonstrated in this work that the use of multivariate techniques is compulsory due to the high complexity of the spectral data obtained from depth profile studies of the archaeological samples. Abstract. Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has become a powerful tool for the direct analysis of a large variety of materials in order to provide qualitative and/or quantitative information. However, there is a lack of information for LIBS analysis of agricultural products. In this work a LIBS system has been designed for the discrimination of Ca, Cu, Fe, and Na elements in Gannan Navel orange. An experimental setup was established by using a Nd:YAG laser operating at 1064 nm and a grating spectrometer with CCD detector. The LIBS spectra of pericarps and fleshes of Gannan Navel orange were collected. The typical spectrum lines of mineral elements Ca,Cu,Fe,and Na were chosen and identified, and the relative content of four elements in pericarps and fleshes were compared and analyzed respectively. The results showed that the relative content of elements Ca, Cu, Fe, and Na in pericarps was more than in fleshes. The LIBS relative intensity of Na, Fe, Ca, Cu elements in pericarps decreased in turn, while the LIBS relative intensity of Na, Cu, Ca, Fe elements in fleshes increased in turn. The experimental results also showed that the relative content of mineral elements in farm product may be analyzed fast by LIBS, and the LIBS technique is a novel means for rapid detection the quality of farm product.
