Evaluation of key factors influencing process quality during construction projects in Pakistan

Abstract: Purpose The quality of construction projects is mainly dependent on the process quality during the construction phase than product quality. The key factors that influence the process quality of building projects in Pakistan during the construction phase of building life cycle are evaluated from literature. This paper aims to discuss these issues. Design/methodology/approach The factors were ranked using the traditional relative importance index (RII) and the second synthetic grey relational analysis method. … Show more

“…The key areas of Grey System Theory include grey relational analysis, grey generating space, grey forecasting, grey decision making, grey control, and grey mathematics. Grey System Theory has seen application in numerous fields, including agriculture (Tan et al, 2014), supplier selection (Mahmoudi et al, 2021a), economic growth analysis (Huang et al, 2020), health care management (Aydemir & Sahin, 2019;Javed and Liu., 2018), sustainable development (Ikram et al, 2021;Abid et al, 2021), environment (Hao et al, 2006), electromagnetic data processing (Jiang et al, 2017), traffic flow prediction (Xiao et al, 2020), energy and emissions (Chen et al, 2021;Zhu et al, 2019), project management (Sheikh et al, 2019;Javed & Liu, 2019), machine learning (Xie et al, 2021;Ma, 2019), among others. It can be seen that the application of Grey System Theory is widespread and multi-disciplinary.…”

“…Santoso and Gallage (2019) identified top 10 critical factors affecting the performance of large construction projects in Sri Lanka, namely large project scope, site management by the contractor, complication of the project, poor planning and scheduling of activities, weakness of experience of the contractor, schedule suspensions , unstable government policies regarding the project, imprecise cost estimates, construction errors and quality issues of completed work, and imprecise time estimates. Sheikh et al (2019) findings indicated that the significant factors that influence the process quality of building projects in Pakistan during the construction phase are the selection of a suitable contractor, the presence of feedback system and quality of shop sketches received from subcontractors. A study conducted by Kusi et al, (2018) in the Nepalese context indicated that the main two failure factors were the lack of knowledge and commitment of the contractor on construction quality and overall quality culture and working environment.…”

“…Different researchers has successfully used RII for analyzing productivity factors in house building projects (see, e.g., Ugwu & Haupt, 2007;Iyer & Jha, 2005;Cheung et al, 2004). Also, it has seen application on Pakistani construction projects as well (Sheikh et al, 2019). RII can be calculated as:…”
