Evaluation of Intravenously Delivered Allogeneic Mesenchymal Stem Cells for Treatment of Elbow Osteoarthritis in Dogs: A Pilot Study

Abstract: Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and collect pilot data measuring clinical effects of intravenously administered, adipose-derived, culture-expanded, allogeneic mesenchymal stem cells in dogs with elbow osteoarthritis. Materials and Methods Dogs (n = 13) with naturally occurring elbow osteoarthritis received three intravenous doses of allogeneic canine mesenchymal stem cells via an open-label clinical trial. Primary outcome measures collected over a 6-month study period in… Show more

“…CBPI questionnaires were conducted as described previously [ 32 ]. CSOM questions based on previously published information were divided into activity and behavior categories [ 41 ]. Owners were asked to pick five time and place specific questions related to activity and grade them on a 1–5 scale (1 = no problem, 2 = a little problematic, 3 = quite problematic, 4 = severely problematic, and 5 = impossible) and three questions related to behavior also graded on a 1–5 scale (1 = significantly less than normal, 2 = less than normal, 3 = normal amount, 4 = more than normal, and 5 = significantly more than normal).…”

“…Multiple studies have tried to evaluate the influence of ASC intra-articular injection and intravenous infusion on osteoarthritis treatment outcomes. It has been proven that the administration of ASCs could reduce pain and lameness, suppress the local inflammation, improve mobility and activity, and potentially promote cartilage regeneration [77][78][79][80][81].…”

“…Meanwhile, there are no particularly effective treatments for these diseases, which not only affect the quality of life of the affected animals, but also require the owners to invest a lot of energy, time and money. Currently, many related reports have con rmed that AD-MSCs therapy in a variety of canine diseases in clinical trials have shown initial results [21][22][23][24][25].…”
