Evaluation of integration of solar energy into the district heating system of the city of Velika Gorica

Abstract: In the current situation the district heating system supplies the 32% of the total thermal consumption in the City of Velika Gorica. The main issue in the district heating system is the utilization of 14 small and distributed heat plants, each providing heat to a separate and individually disconnected heating grid. Reduction of costs and CO 2 emissions can be reached with a high penetration of renewable sources. The aim of this paper is to evaluate and design the integration of a central solar heating plant wi… Show more

“…The way to achieve economic decarbonization with 100% renewables systems is being extensively studied (i.e., at a global [5], regional [6], national [7], territorial [8], or city level [9]). In general terms, such studies mainly focus on the associated feasibility, reliability, and costs.…”

“…The EnergyPLAN program analysis model [19] The energy transition towards a clean and digitalised energy system is proceeding as fast as ever [20,21]. Islands have been identified as lighthouses to test and validate innovative solutions with high RESs penetration that might then be replicated on the mainland [22]. Small islands represent unique systems, and they all have to face similar challenges such as high energy costs, CO2 emissions, security of energy supply and system stability due to small grids and thus low inertia [23].…”
