Aim: The present study was undertaken to assess IPM modules against Fall Armyworm in Maize through Frontline Demonstration and its economic impact. Place and Duration of Study: The present study was carried out in Ananthapuramu district of Andhra Pradesh during the period 2020-2023. Methodology: The main objective of frontline demos is to demonstrate recently available crop production and protection technology, as well as their management practices, in a farmer's field in a micro farming setting. The KVK, Reddipalle conducted front line demonstrations on maize throughout rabi seasons of 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022–2023, as part of annual technical programme of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Reddipalle, Ananthapuramu district organised 30 FLD locations in KVK operational area of adopted villages. Following a group discussion, a list of farmers was created, and those who were chosen received specialised training in various parts of suggested protection technologies. Results: According to the current results and subsequent analysis of the results, maize reported a higher total (91120 Rs ha-1) when compared to farmers practice (74309 Rs ha-1). The benefit cost ratio was significantly higher in the recommended approach (2.51) when compared to farmers practice (2.12). The higher grain output and better market pricing of the produce may be the causes of the maize demonstration's higher net returns and B: C ratio. Conclusion: The FLD intervention is highly effective among maize farmers with increased net returns of 13618 rupees per hectare. Hence, FLD plays a vital role in dissemination of technology on a community basis when compared to other approaches.

Invasive alien species (IAS) pose a severe threat to global agriculture, with their impact projected to escalate due to climate change and expanding international trade. The fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), a native of the Americas, has rapidly spread across various continents, causing significant damage to several food crops, especially maize. Integrated pest management (IPM) programs are vital for sustainable FAW control, combining multiple strategies for sustainable results. Over three consecutive years, 2019–20, 2020–21 and 2021–22, the field demonstrations were conducted in semiarid regions of India, testing a four-component IPM approach viz., pheromone traps, microbial, botanicals and ETL based applications of insecticides against farmers' practices (sole insecticide application). IPM implementation led to substantial reductions in FAW infestation. Furthermore, egg mass and larvae infestations were significantly lower in IPM-adopted villages compared to conventional practices. Pheromone-based monitoring demonstrated a consistent reduction in adult moth populations. The lowest technology gap (10.42), extension gap (8.33) and technology index (12.25) was recorded during 2020–21. The adoption of IPM led to increased maize yields (17.49, 12.62 and 24.87% over control), higher net returns (919, 906.20 and 992.93 USD), and favourable benefit–cost ratios (2.74, 2.39 and 2.33) compared to conventional practices respectively during 2019–20, 2020–21 and 2021–22. The economic viability of IPM strategies was evident across three consecutive years, confirming their potential for sustainable FAW management in the semiarid region of India. These strategies hold promise for adoption in other parts of the world sharing similar climatic conditions.

Impact of Front Line Demonstration on Pigeon Pea in Farmers Field through a Cluster Approach

In the operational region of KVK, Palem, a total of 175 cluster frontline demos (CFLDs) on pigeon pea were carried out with the Redgram variety PRG-176 from 2019–20 to 2021–2022. Through farmer meetings and group discussions, the crucial inputs in the production technology now in use were identified. The results for pigeon peas showed an overall yield trend of 12.50 to 13.00 q/ha and a yield improvement of 11.11 to 11.84% over the yield from local methods, respectively. Due to significant heterogeneity in the extent of adoption of recommended technology based on the level of risk associated in terms of cost, convenience, ability, and knowledge of the concerned practice, the yield levels were significantly lower under local practices. Pigeon pea had an average extension gap, technology gap, and technology index of 128.30, 125, and 8.93%, respectively. The average gross and net returns of the pigeon pea crop demonstration were, respectively, 72895 and 47045 percent higher than the farmers' practices. Throughout the trial, the average benefit cost ratio was found to be greater in pigeon pea, at 2.8 respectively. The technological gap and index percentage were found to vary as a result of differences in agro-climatic parameters, soil fertility, biotic stressors, socioeconomic status, and management practices. Therefore, it is plainly clear from the data that the frontline demonstration program's use of superior varieties, packaging, and processes together with scientific intervention has contributed to raising the productivity and profitability of pulses in the global economy.
