Evaluation of individual dosimetry in mixed neutron and photon radiation fields (EVIDOS). Part I: scope and methods of the project

Abstract: Supported by the European Commission, the EVIDOS project started in November 2001 with the broad goal of evaluating state of the art dosimetry techniques in representative workplaces of the nuclear industry. Seven European institutes joined efforts with end users at nuclear power plants, at fuel processing and reprocessing plants, and at transport and storage facilities. A comprehensive programme was devised to evaluate capabilities and limitations of standard and innovative personal dosemeters in relation to … Show more

“…The EVIDOS project, supported by the European Commission within the 5th Framework Programme, aims at evaluating state of the art dosimetry techniques in representative workplaces of the nuclear industry with mixed neutron-photon radiation (1) . Seven European institutes with recognised expertise in radiation protection instruments and methods joined efforts with end users at nuclear power plants, at fuel processing and reprocessing plants, and at transport and storage facilities.…”

“…More detailed information on the measurement positions is presented elsewhere (4,8) . The distributions were strongly-directed forwards for the simulated workplace fields CANEL and SIGMA (see Figure 1, note the logarithmic scale) and for the 'Cask midline' positions (see Figure 2), and directed less strongly forwards for the positions 'Krü mmel Cask side', 'Ringhals Pos N Cask end' (see Figure 2), 'Krü mmel Reactor top' and 'Ringhals Pos.…”

“…With the ratio H p (10) DS /H Ã (10) DS of personal to ambient neutron dose equivalent, determined with a novel directional spectrometry system (5) , a value for the personal neutron dose equivalent H p (10) DS can be calculated. For the irradiations, the dosemeters were mounted on a Perspex-slab-phantom of size 30 Â 30 Â 15 cm 3 . The surface of the slab-phantom, on which the dosemeters PE 4% LiNO 3 (bare and with 1 mm B 4 C) were mounted, was oriented to a direction specified to be 0 (front).…”
