Evaluation of In Vivo Wound-Healing and Anti-Inflammatory Activities of Solvent Fractions of Fruits of Argemone mexicana L. (Papaveraceae)

Abstract: Introduction. The solvent fractions of the fruits of Argemone mexicana L. (Papaveraceae) have not yet been explored scientifically for in vivo wound healing and anti-inflammatory activities. The objective of this study was, therefore, to evaluate in vivo wound healing and anti-inflammatory activities of the solvent fractions of the fruit of Argemone mexicana L. (Papaveraceae) in rats. Method. The crude extract of Argemone mexicana was fractionated with n-hexane, ethyl acetate, and distilled water. Wound healin… Show more

“…For instance, alkaloids have been reported to stimulate the formation of epithelial cells, expediting the re-epithelization process [35]. In addition, favonoids and polyphenols have been observed to possess antioxidant, anti-infammatory, and antimicrobial activities, which collectively contribute to the acceleration of wound healing [36][37][38][39]. Saponins have also been shown to contribute to wound contraction and enhance epithelialization [39,40].…”

“…The application of the ointment resulted in a remarkable decrease in wound size, faster epithelialization, and elevated levels of fibrosis, neovascularization, and collagen tissue formation. There was an increased degree of tensile strength, oedema inhibition, and granuloma mass development (50).…”

“…Taxonomic classification was difficult. Twenty-four and thirty-two species were identified and distributed in North and South America, Hawaii, Australia, India, and various parts of Africa and Asia [1][2][3][4]. Argemone L. plants with stems, leaves, and spiny capsules family of plants from whose Argemone Mexicana belong to this genus widely distributed in Mexico and the United States and used in traditional medicine for various pathologies, including does not require special care, and is easy to obtain; however, it is essential to clarify that phytochemical knowledge about the genus Argemone spp is limited and the scientific literature is scarce, so it is pertinent to carry out studies on the phytochemical profile, antioxidant, toxicological and antimicrobial activity of the plant for agrochemical, pharmaceutical, and therapeutic industry Approximately forty alkaloids compounds belonging to six groups with isoquinoline bases have been isolated from plants of the genus Argemone; however, the genus Argemone has been little studied by botanists.…”
