Evaluation of immune protection induced by DNA vaccines from Haemaphysalis longicornis paramyosin in rabbits

Abstract: Background Haemaphysalis longicornis is a blood-sucking ectoparasite that can cause diseases by transmitting some pathogens to humans and animals. Paramyosin (Pmy) is an immunomodulatory protein, which plays an important role in immune reactions against parasites. In this study, we evaluated the immune protection elicited by recombinant plasmids encoding H. longicornis Pmy in rabbits.ResultsRabbits vaccinated with pcDNA3.1(+)-Pmy developed high level of IgG compared to control group, suggesting that humoral im… Show more

“…Indeed, the merits and demerits of DNA vaccines have been discussed extensively [ 151 ]. The concept of DNA tick-vaccines has been demonstrated [ 152 , 153 ]. Similarly, chimeric DNA constructs could be combined to formulate cocktail vaccines, however, this could also trigger undesired immunological reactions such as antigenic competition [ 154 ].…”

“…In contrast, many ticks are of medical and economic importance, and the prevention and control of ticks has always been received attention. In China, there are many effective control strategies for ticks, including rotational grazing (Dong et al, ), chemical control (Nong et al, ; Rajput, Hu, Chen, Arijo, & Xiao, ), biological control (Ren et al, ; Sun et al, ), and vaccine development (T. T. Zhang et al, ). In such cases, the dynamic changes in ticks also deserve further study.…”

“…The abundance of band #1, containing an unknown tick host protein, increased gradually due to the presence of R. slovaca . The main protein in band #3 was identified as paramyosin, an immunomodulatory protein playing an important role in immune reactions against parasites in vertebrate hosts [38]. Finally, the major protein in band #2 was recognised as putative defensin.…”
