Evaluation of High-Viscosity Residual Fractions by Hot Filtration

Dominik Schlehöfer,
Aleš Vráblík,
Kateřina Chrudimská
et al.

Abstract: The high-viscosity residual fractions obtained during the secondary processing of crude oil are widely used as components in the production of marine fuels. Because of the high viscosity of these residual fractions, they cannot be used as marine fuel in accordance with the ISO 8217 standard (which monitors the quality parameters of residual marine fuels) without being mixed with a suitable low-viscosity cutter stock. Hot filtration, in accordance with the standardized procedures ISO 10307-1 and ISO 10307-2, is… Show more

“…It is important to pay increased attention, already at the laboratory scale, to the homogeneity and compatibility of alternative materials added to standard refinery streams. , In the extreme, technological problems could occur, for example, the formation of deposits, sludge, or deteriorated product quality. Over the years, the pilot test has proven to be a suitable tool for evaluating alternative raw materials, various reaction conditions, or catalyst activation and deactivation. , With the help of pilot testing, it is possible to test the above-mentioned issues from various aspects and thus experience these nonstandard situations before putting them into practice. Pilot testing thus brings a clear benefit to existing technologies .…”

“…It contains components boiling above 360 °C and has specific gravity above 0.933 (API < 20) [6]. It is treated in the petroleum refinery to extract additional amounts of light oil products and produce heavy oil products like fuel oil, marine fuels, and road pavement bitumen [7][8][9][10][11]. All processes involved in the technological chain of heavy oil treatment have been the subject of modeling and simulation with the aim to better understand the behavior of the heavy oil plants and determine the values of the operation variables providing the optimum performance from economical, energy saving, and environmental points of view [12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20].…”
