Evaluation of heme oxygenase 1 (HO 1) in Cd and Ni induced cytotoxicity and crosstalk with ROS quenching enzymes in two to four leaf stage seedlings of Vigna radiata

Abstract: Research on heme oxygenase in plants has received consideration in recent years due to its several roles in development, defense, and metabolism during various environmental stresses. In the current investigation, the role of heme oxygenase (HO) 1 was evaluated in reducing heavy metal (Cd and Ni) uptake and alleviating Cd and Ni toxicity effects in the hydroponically grown seedlings of Vigna radiata var. PDM 54. Seedlings were subjected to Cd- and Ni-induced oxidative stress independently at different concentr… Show more

“…Previous reports demonstrated that HO 1 plays an imperative role in antioxidant protection towards various abiotic stresses (Balestrasse et al 2005;Yannarelli et al 2006;Verma et al 2015;Santa-Cruz et al 2017;Mahawar et al 2018a). Zilli et al (2009) verified HO 1 stimulation under salinity stress in Glycine max leaves.…”

“…In higher plants HO 1 among various HO isoforms (HO 1, HO 2, HO 3 and HO 4) is the foremost stress response enzyme (Dixit et al 2014). HO 1 performs antioxidant activity under various abiotic stress including UV-B stress (Yannarelli et al 2006;Santa-Cruz et al 2017) and cadmium stress (Mahawar et al 2018a). Reports on heme-Heme oxygenase 1 (heme-HO 1), a novel compound which act as an antioxidant and involve in regulation of tolerance towards ammonium was investigated in rice HO 1 (OsSE5).…”

“…Reports discussed the role of HO and its product in scavenging ROS in plants (Mahawar & Shekhawat, 2016). The role of HO 1 in providing defence against the reactive oxygen species due to the oxidative stress generated by the cadmium treated soybean plants has been well reported (Balestrasse, Noriega, Batlle, & Tomaro, 2005;Balestrasse, Yannarelli, Noriega, Batlle, & Tomaro, 2008;Mahawar, Kumar, & Shekhawat, 2017;Shekhawat et al, 2011). The role of HO 1 is also demonstrated by antioxidant pretreatment examination in soybean plants (Yannarelli, Noriega, Batlle, & Tomaro, 2006).…”

“…Phytoremediation represents a cost-effective, environmentally friendly, and in situ applicable technology for cleaning metal-polluted soils. Plants that are utilized for the phytoremediation of heavy metal-polluted soils should have rapid growth, high biomass and high concentrations of heavy metals in their tissues [3,4]. Jatropha curcas L. (Euphorbiaceae), commonly known as the physic nut, is a deciduous perennial shrub distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions of America, Africa and Asia.…”
