Evaluation of Hawaiian Green Turtles (Chelonia Mydas) for Potential Pathogens Associated With Fibropapillomas

Abstract: Thirty-two juvenile green turtles (Chelonla mydas) were captured alive in Kaneohe Bay, Island of Oahu, Hawaii, during September 1991. Ten of the turtles sampled were afflicted with green turtle fibropapillomatosis (GTFP) in varying degrees of severity. Virus isolation attempts were negative in all individuals. Using nasopharyngeal and cloacal swabs, we isolated 28 Gram negative bacteria, five Gram positive cocci, Bacillus spp., and diphtheroids. The most common isolates included Pseudomonas fluorescens (68%), … Show more

“…Solitary or multiple tumors were found in all regions of the body, including lines of suture adjacent to the dermal shields. The formations are described by other authors in the same way in the turtles included in this work (Jacobson et al 1989, Norton et al 1990, Aguirre et al 1994, 1998, 2002, Brooks et al 1994, Adnyana et al 1997, Work et al 2004.…”

“…Histologically, fibropapillomas are characterized by benign papillary epidermal hyperplasia supported on broad stalks of proliferating fibrovascular stroma (Lucke 1938, Smith & Coates 1938, 1939, Schlumberger & Lucke 1948, Jacobson et al 1989, Harshbarger 1991, Aguirre et al 1994, Williams et al 1994. Agents known to cause similar proliferative cutaneous lesions in other species, including chemical carcinogens, ultraviolet light, oncogenic viruses, and metazoan parasites, have been proposed as possible causes of GTFP and have been reviewed by Sundberg (1991) and Herbst (1994).…”
