Evaluation of grip strength with a sustained maximal isometric contraction for 6 and 10 seconds

Abstract: The grip strength in which subjects sustained a maximal isometric contraction for 6 seconds (the 6-second test) was compared with that for 10 seconds (the 10-second test) to clarify a reliable sustained grip strength test procedure. Fifty healthy students (22+/-4 years, 25 men and 25 women) participated in this study. Strength was measured continuously by the Dexter (Cedaron Medical Inc.). The maximal grip strength, the peak time, and the momentary strength every second during a trial were evaluated. For both … Show more

“…All tests were performed by the affected and unaffected sides and both the dominant and non-dominant hands were compared. The hand strength test (Jamar dynamometer) was made up of 4 components grip, tip, lateral, and jaw [ 33 34 35 ]. The Purdue pegboard test was measured by calculating the number of pins the patient was able to place in the holes in 30 seconds [ 36 37 ] while the 9-hole peg test measured the time (seconds) it took to put all of the pins in the holes [ 38 ].…”

“…Statistical significance was set at p < .05. Due to substantial differences between absolute values of maximum handgrip between men and women, the results were normalized through the percentage of maximum strength relative to baseline (%kg; Kamimura & Ikuta, 2001; Stock et al, 2019). Software IBM SPSS Statistic 24.0 for Mac was used for the statistical calculations.…”

“…The GS was measured with maximal isometric contraction for 6 seconds with the subjects feeling no pain (i.e. pain free GS) during the grip test ( 26 ). The protocol for measuring WES is explained below.…”

“…From the initial position of 20° extension at wrist, the subjects were asked to press the centre of force transducer with the 3rd knuckle up to the point of onset of pain (i.e. pain-free WES) ( 26 ). All of the measurements were performed 3 times with 1 minute between trials, and the mean of 3 trials for peak values was used for further analysis.…”
