Evaluation of Grinding of Unfilled and Glass Fiber Reinforced Polyamide 6,6

Abstract: This paper investigates the grinding process on unreinforced (PA66) and reinforced glass-fiber polyamide 6,6 (PA66 GF30) with Al2O3 and SiC abrasive wheels. Both materials were ground by varying rotations, workpiece infeed speed, depth of cuts for sequential roughing/finishing steps. Dry and liquid coolant conditions were also considered during the grinding process to evaluate the effects on part quality. The surface roughness was used to assess the quality of the final products with several parameter combinat… Show more

“…Due to the different data acquisition channels, the original data were not synchronized, and a post-processing phase fused all the data. The selected grinding parameters for this experiment diverged from those of previous works [ 19 , 21 ] due to the sample geometry and sampling limitations. The length of the grinding wheel path for force acquisition was only 60 mm.…”

“…As demonstrated in previous research, aluminum oxide (Al 2 O 3 ) grain wheels were selected due to their availability, price, and compatibility [ 19 ]. Two wheels, coded 45A120-5G11RM-LV233/35 and 87A80-2H13RM-JV56/35 (ELBE Schleifmittelwerk GmBh & Co KG, Sachsenheim, Germany), had an initial diameter of 406 mm and a thickness of 30 mm.…”

“…Spina and Cavalcante [23] evaluated the grinding of unfilled and glass fiber reinforced polyamide 66. The results showed that the presence of glass fibers resulted in lower surface quality of ground polyamide 66.…”

“…Polyamide 66 (PA66) is a very important thermoplastic polymer material and has been widely used in engineering fields with the advantages of high-strength, good stability, light weight, and relatively low cost [ 1 , 2 , 3 ]. However, with the rapid development of science and technology, the original PA66 can no longer meet the requirements of contemporary applications, especially in the fields that require high mechanical properties [ 4 , 5 , 6 , 7 , 8 ].…”
