“…This supports results obtained by Suckling (1976). In an evaluation of Grasslands white clover varieties on hill country at Ballantrae the resident white clover population performed most satisfactorily, particularly during autumn when it appeared that this material was more capable of surviving and recovering from a dry summer than the overs own varieties.…”

“…Most comparisons conducted within New Zealand have similarly found that Pitau has given a higher yield than Huia over the cool part of the year (Barclay 1970;Lambert et al 1970;Smetham 1972;Suckling 1976;Vartha & Clifford 1978).…”

“…Rates of seedling establishment recorded 11 weeks after sowing were within the range expected for white clover in North Island hill country. Suckling (1976) recorded 9.0-10.7% establishment of oversown Huia seeds 17 weeks after autumn sowing, whereas Chapman & Fletcher (1985) recorded 37.5 and 51.8% of seeds establishing for Tahora and Huia respectively 11 weeks after overs owing in May 1983. Chapman & Fletcher (1985) also recorded higher establishment rates for Huia than for Tahora after oversowing in May 1982, and the relative establishment rates of the two cu1tivars recorded in this experiment are consistent with those earlier results.…”
