Evaluation of Geochemical Characteristics of Groundwater in Parts of Ghataprabha Sub-basin Using DRASTIC Indices

Abstract: Ghataprabha is an auxiliary of river Krishna and flows over Chandgad taluk of Kolhapur district, Maharashtra. Bauxite mining was one of the major issues in this part of the sub-basin, in the early ’90s due to which there was a strong public protest about the quality of water. Accordingly, a survey was conducted to get the public perception on water pollution in the headwater catchment of Ghataprabha sub-basin. During the survey, a broad opinion was expressed with regard to water quality contamination of Ghatap… Show more

“…The high intensity rainfall for a prolonged period causes weathering of surface soil and dilution of ions in surface water (Fu et al, 2020;Ghaemi & Noshadi, 2022). The precipitation water percolates and reacts with carbon dioxide generated in microbial processes and air trapped in pores in summers to form carbonic acid (Mali et al, 2020;Rao et al, 2021). Later, the carbonic acid form dissociates to release hydrogen ions lowering the pH (Marghade et al, 2021).…”

“…The groundwater's ability to withstand external pollution under various hydrogeological conditions, without considering the influence of human activities and pollution sources, and solely focusing on internal hydrogeological factors, plays a crucial role in evaluating its vulnerability [22][23][24]. The DRASTIC model has its limitations in assigning weights and ratios to different thematic layers and their subcategories.…”
