Evaluation of genotoxic effects in Brazilian agricultural workers exposed to pesticides and cigarette smoke using machine-learning algorithms

Abstract: Monitoring exposure to xenobiotics by biomarker analyses, such as a micronucleus assay, is extremely important for the precocious detection and prevention of diseases, such as oral cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate genotoxic effects in rural workers who were exposed to cigarette smoke and/or pesticides and to identify possible classification patterns in the exposure groups. The sample included 120 participants of both sexes aged between 18 and 39, who were divided into the following four groups: co… Show more

“…Analyzing the collected samples a statistically significant increase of the number of micronuclei is observed in smoker office employees in relation to non-smoker ones indicating the contribution of smoking habit to DNA induced damage. This observation is compatible with previously reported data [44] [45] [46] [47]. In the meantime buccal epithelium appears to be affected by smoking.…”

“…In addition, we observed a significant increase in the score of 4 (greater damage) in the comet assay in all exposed groups, except in the group exposed to low oral concentration of 2,4-D, regardless of the route of exposure. Previous studies with long-term human exposure to pesticides have shown an increase in the tail length of comets in the exposed groups (Ali et al, 2018) and an increase in the number of micronuclei in exfoliated oral epithelial cells (Tomiazzi et al, 2018). Although it was not statistically significant, we observed a slight increase in micronucleus number in acute exposure of animals exposed to high concentration in the 72 hr interval but with damage recovery after 192 hr of exposure.…”

“…Recognition pattern is one of the most prominent functions in Artificial Intelligence (Papa et al, 2012). Different studies have shown the effectiveness of using machine learning in the biological and medical fields (Yılmaz et al, 2016;Tomiazzi et al, 2018;Vieira et al, 2019). The evaluation of data made through machine learning, makes the analysis non-subjective, which can happen in relation to statistical analysis.…”

“…For example, Cepeda et al ( 2020 ) warn that even though the factors associated with the development of the cancer are discussed, data on cancer types and their frequency are often lacking. It is important to note here that the monitoring of exposure to xenobiotics, such as pesticides, using biomarkers like the micronucleus test, is an essential tool for the early detection and prevention of diseases such as oral cancer (Tomiazzi et al 2018 ). Another factor limiting the conclusions of a toxicological or genotoxic analysis is the timing of the testing, which means that it may not always be possible to link the results with the specific components of a pesticide, which is an important question, given that the mixing of pesticides is a common practice (Hutter et al 2020 ; Ramos et al 2021 ).…”
