Date palm is the primary agricultural crop in Oman, and it constitutes 80 % of all fruit crops produced and 50 % of the total agricultural area in the country. Oman is the eighth largest producer of dates in the world with an average annual production of 260,000 mt per annum. There are approximately more than over seven million date palms and 250 cultivars in cultivation, primarily in the northern governorates of the sultanate. However, around 70 % of the total date production is harvested from only 10 cultivars, and a small fraction (2.6 %) of the total date production is exported. Only half of the dates produced are used for human consumption, with the other half being utilized primarily for animal feed or considered surplus and wasted. Dates are mainly harvested for fresh fruit consumption; however, alternative uses such as date syrup, date sugar, and other by-products can also be found in the local market. Dubas bug and red palm weevil are the dominant biotic factors that affect date quality and yield in Oman. Traditional methods of cultivation, small farm size, enough labor available, and poor postharvest handling and marketing are the main issues that face date palm production in Oman. New plantlets are produced from tissue culture with a primary focus on superior cultivars that are kept, among other cultivars, in the only date palm ex situ gene bank in the interior of Oman. Enhancing fruit quality by optimizing fruit size and nutritional content and rapid cultivar selectivity based on molecular techniques for better or improved commercial cultivars will increase the marketability of Omani dates. Furthermore, employing modern orchard layouts and mechanization of the labordependent cultural practices such as irrigation, pruning, pollination, and harvesting is vital for the sustainable and profi table production of dates in Oman.

Precision agriculture can be cost effective for date palm groves because the tree positions are known and fixed, the groves are mostly structured and many of agricultural operations are applied manually. Therefore, the new technology tools of precision agriculture are not essential. This study was done to improve date palm yield using maps of the variation in tree properties. Data on five Mozafati tree properties, such as sex, age, yield, visual appearance and fruit length were measured and recorded for each tree in five groves near the city of Bam in Iran. Tree positions were defined and the above properties were mapped. It was difficult to judge patterns in the variation because of tree to tree variability. Therefore, the Mamdani fuzzy inference system (MFIS) was used to classify the productive trees based on yield, fruit length and visual appearance, and to produce a tree total quality map (TTQM) for each grove. Based on the TTQM the trees were graded as excellent, good, medium, poor and very poor. The trees were also graded by the date growers who were experts. The evaluation for all groves by MFIS showed 87% general agreement with the results from the human expert indicating that it is a feasible method for classifying date palms based on quality. The results indicted that there are young and old trees in these groves that need different treatments, such as the amount of fertilizer required. Some date growers have low incomes, therefore, the overall TTQM is suitable for them because they can identify which trees have the greatest needs and apply limited resources to only those. This case study illustrates the use of computer and mathematical software to enhance date palm production and reduce the costs.

ABSTRAKPendahuluan: Tulisan ini membahas tentang fuzzy inference system untuk proses diagnosa level asma. Proses diagnosa dilakukan dari gejala-gejala yang timbul pada penderita asma. Proses input, hasil, serta metodologi dalam pembuatan sistem dikerjakan dengan fokus dan teliti, sehingga sistem ini diharapkan valid dan layak digunakan untuk diagnosa medis. Metode: Metodologi dalam sistem meliputi knowledge base, fuzzyfi er, inference engine. Dengan gejala yang digunakan pada diagnosa sistem antara lain sesak napas, mengi, tingkat kewaspadaan/gejala unik, tingkat pernapasan, tingkat bicara, denyut nadi/menit, serta PEF setelah bronkodilator. Dan hasil keluaran dari diagnosa yaitu level asma yang diderita pasien dari ringan, sedang, berat hingga RAI/gagal napas. Kinerja sistem telah diuji di Rumah Sakit Pertamina Cilacap dengan 20 pasien penderita asma. Perbandingan antara hasil sistem dan ahli medis atau dokter yang telah menangani pasien asma. Hasil: Dari hasil uji sistem didapatkan 90% sesuai dengan diagnosa dokter.
