Evaluation of gastric motility by Fourier analysis of condensed images

Abstract: In this study Fourier analysis was applied to condensed images of gastric emptying with the aim of evaluating the amplitude and frequency of gastric contractions as well as gastric emptying in patients with various well-defined disorders. In 15 controls, 65 patients with progressive systemic sclerosis (PSS), 41 patients with diabetes mellitus type I (DM), 12 patients with pyloric stenosis and 9 patients who had undergone gastric surgery, gastric emptying was determined after ingestion of a semi-solid test meal… Show more

“…Thereafter, blood samples were taken at 30-min intervals until 330 min. The scrambled eggs and Jell-O were labeled with 99m Tc-Sn-colloid at ϳ70 MBq for measurements of gastric emptying by high-resolution scintigraphy (20 images/min; Orbiter, Siemens, Erlangen, Germany) starting immediately after completion of the meal and continuing for the remainder of the experiment (14,15).…”

“…Completion of gastric emptying was assumed at a reduction of the initial activity to Ͻ5%. Loss of activity was corrected for the radioactive half-life of 99mTc (14). According to the procedure guidelines of The Society of Nuclear Medicine (6), a continuous framing rate of 30 -60 s is recommended to accurately determine lag phase and half-time of gastric emptying.…”

“…The study protocol has been published previously [11]. After an overnight fast, the subjects were asked to ingest a standardized semisolid test meal consisting of 25 g oatmeal (Kölln Schmelzflocken®], Elmshorn, Germany) dissolved in 400 ml of water (temperature 37-40 °C) labeled with 60-70 MBq 99mTc-Sn-colloid.…”

“…During the time period from the 10-17th minute, the frame rate was increased to 20 frames per minute in order to analyze gastric motor function as previously described [11,14]. Data were acquired in a 64 ϫ 64 matrix.…”
