Scuffing is a catastrophic failure that causes significant surface damages such as plastic flow and welding with a marked increase in friction, wear, temperature and noise. In this study, variations in the crystal grain structure of a steel surface was analysed in situ during the scuffing process using a synchrotron X-ray diffraction system, combined with a visible camera and a near-infrared thermometer. The in situ observation system was synchronously operated to capture a contact area between a rotating sapphire ring and a stationary bearing steel pin. The Debye-Scherrer ring diffracted from the contact area was captured by a two-dimensional detector. The scuffing behaviour could be classified as either micro scuffing or macro scuffing. During the micro scuffing period, plastic flow occurred intermittently with a significant temperature rise of approximately 1000 °C. During the macro scuffing period, heat was continuously generated over the contact area. When plastic flow occurred, the captured Debye-Scherrer ring indicated the orientation of crystal grains as well as a phase transformation from martensite to austenite. This study constitutes the first in-situ observation of the behaviour of crystal grains in the dynamic recrystallisation process occurring during the scuffing process.

In Situ Observation of Wear Process Before and During Scuffing in Sliding Contact

In this study, a direct observation of a point contact area was conducted to understand the scuffing phenomenon. The contact area was produced between a rotating sapphire disc and a stationary steel ball and it was lubricated using n-hexadecane. The image detected by a colour digital CCD camera, load, and friction were synchronously recorded by a computer during the test. It was found that wear debris produced in the contact area played an important role in the wear process, which includes running-in and scuffing. In the test, debris particles accumulated in the inlet zone, and some particles entered the contact area to cause abrasive wear of the ball surface, even in the light-load stages. During the running-in process, the abrasive wear by debris particles changed the conformity between the sliding surfaces. In the high-load stage, just before the occurrence of scuffing, the whole contact area was flattened at once. When scuffing occurred, the contact area suddenly expanded. The conformity of the contact area was dramatically changed during its expansion. The flattening of the whole contact area and dramatic expansion with changing the conformity seemed to play important roles in scuffing.

Tribo-properties of hard coated teols were evaluated under using cold-forming oi]s for steel by ball penetration test, Diamond-like carbon including Si (DLC-Si) is a special target of hard coatings fbr better properties of anti-galiing and low friction, but it cannot show good performance under a dry condition for the severe test. Using pure rnineral oil, VC, TiN and DLC-Si indicated large ball penetrating load, When oil containing phosphoric esters of 30% was applied, DLC-Si reduced the load by nearly 30% for VC and TiN, but some scratches were observed on the DLC-Si surface. Applying oil containing phosphoric esters and phosphoric acid, DLC-Si performed low friction without scratches on the surface. Also the load of DLC-Si was smal]er than those ofTiN and VC. The combination of DLC-Si and high perforrnance oil was so effective.
