In the present study, fruit weight, fruit firmness, external fruit color, soluble solid content, pH, titratable acidity, vitamin C, total phenolics, total anthocyanins and antioxidant capacity of eight wild bilberry grown in Coruh valley in northeastern Turkey were determined. The blueberry cv. 'Bluecrop' was also studied to make comparison with bilberry genotypes. Antioxidant activity of bilberry and blueberry fruits were comparatively assessed by FRAP (Ferric reducing antioxidant power) assay. Significantly higher contents of phenolics and anthocyanins were found in bilberry fruits comparted with blueberry fruits. However, blueberry cv. 'Bluecrop' exhibited higher fruit weight and vitamin C content than bilberry fruits. Total phenolic and total anthocyanin content was 327 mg gallic acid equivalent and 142 mg of cyanidin-3-glucoside equivalent in 100 g fresh fruit in cv. 'Bluecrop', while it was between 492-563 mg gallic acid equaivalent and 307-342 mg of cyanidin-3-glucoside equivalent in 100 g fresh fruits of bilberry accessions. Moreover, wild accessions had approximately 2-3 folds higher antioxidant capacity than cv. 'Bluecrop'. The obtained results suggest the possibility of improving the bioactive and antioxidant properties of bilberry cultivars by using wild ones in cross breedings. It was also concluded that genotypes significantly affect the bioactive content of fruits and consequently the possibility of using wild bilberry fruits as a potential source of natural antioxidants in food industry is worth to be considered.

Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o comportamento fenológico, a produtividade e a qualidade de oito cultivares de mirtilo do grupo rabbiteye (Bluegem, Bluebelle, Powderblue, Florida, Delite, Briteblue, Climax e Woodard), na região de Pelotas, RS. O trabalho foi realizado durante os ciclos produtivos de 2003/2004, 2004/2005 e 2005/2006. As plantas foram dispostas no pomar em blocos varietais aleatórios, com 16 plantas por cultivar, no total de quatro linhas, com duas cultivares por linha. Para a análise das características dos frutos, a média de cada ano de avaliação foi considerada como uma repetição. Foram observadas as datas de início e fi m da fl oração, início e fi nal de colheita, massa, diâmetro longitudinal dos frutos, número de frutos por planta, teor de sólidos solúveis totais, produção média por planta e produtividade estimada por hectare. Não houve diferença entre as cultivares avaliadas quanto às características massa, diâmetro médio de frutos e teores de sólidos solúveis totais. Na região de Pelotas, há viabilidade técnica para o cultivo de mirtilo, cujas cultivares Bluebelle, Briteblue e Bluegem são as mais produtivas.Termos para indexação: Vaccinium, adaptação, pequenas frutas, produtividade, qualidade dos frutos. Phenology, production and quality of blueberry cultivarsAbstract -The aim of this work was to evaluate the yield and quality of blueberry cultivars from the rabbiteye group (Bluegem, Bluebelle, Powderblue, Florida, Delite, Briteblue, Climax and Woodard), in Pelotas County, Southern of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, during three growing seasons: 2003/2004, 2004/2005 and 2005/2006. The plants were set in randomized varietal blocks in the orchard, with 16 plants per cultivar, totaling four lines, with two cultivars per line. For statistic analysis of the fruits characteristics, each year of evaluation was considered as one repetition. The characteristics evaluated were the start and the end of fl owering, beginning and end of harvest, mass, longitudinal diameter of fruits, number of fruit per plant, content of total soluble solids, average production by plant, and the estimated productivity per hectare. There was no difference among the cultivars evaluated for the characteristics mass, mean diameter of fruits and levels of total soluble solids. In the region of Pelotas, there is technical viability for growing blueberry, whose cultivars Bluebelle, Briteblue and Bluegem are the most productive.

Success in the cultivation of half-high and lowbush blueberry has been achieved in Estonia. The objective of the experiment was to evaluate highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) cultivation possibilities in northern conditions. The field trial with 15 highbush blueberry and three half-high blueberry cultivars was established in South Estonia (58°21' N, 26°31' E) in 2003. To select cultivars for experiment we took into consideration the winter hardiness of plants and harvest season of berries. The experimental plantation produced its first yield in 2007 and current data are based on this year. In 2007, 'Blue Rose', 'Bluegold', 'Bruni', 'Caroline Blue', 'Chandler', 'Denise Blue', 'Nui' and 'Reka' had more winter damage. The blueberry plants of all cultivars had winter damage, but none of the plants died for that reason. 'Blue Rose' and 'Nui' had smaller plants. The yields of highbush blueberries 'Bluecrop', 'Denise Blue' and 'Hardyblue' were the highest. The berry weight ranged from 1.1 to 4.2 g. 'Bruni' and 'Nui' had the largest berries. The harvest season of 'Caroline Blue' was very late; therefore, some berries did not ripen. Results showed that highbush blueberry grew satisfactorily in Estonian conditions and we can recommend all of these cultivars for the home garden. 'Bluecrop', 'Denise Blue', 'Hardyblue' (syn. 1613A), 'Olympia' and 'Reka' are more suitable for commercial cultivation.
