Evaluation of erythrocyte and reticulocyte parameters as indicative of iron deficiency in patients with anemia of chronic disease

Abstract: ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mature red cell and reticulocyte parameters to identify three conditions: iron deficiency anemia, anemia of chronic disease, and anemia of chronic disease associated with absolute iron deficiency.MethodsPeripheral blood cells from 117 adult patients with anemia were classified according to iron status, inflammation, and hemoglobinopathies as: iron deficiency anemia (n = 42), anemia of chronic disease (n = 28), anemia of chronic disease associa… Show more

“…Mean serum ferritin levels in the three groups were 10.85, 83.35 and 773.4 µg/L, respectively, while median values were 10.9, 63.4 and 374 µg/L, respectively. Similar results were seen in studies by Torino et al and Punnonen et al As serum ferritin is a marker of inflammation, the levels tend to be higher in patients suffering from inflammatory disorders and therefore it cannot be relied upon as a sole marker for iron status in these subset of patients.…”

“…The mean levels of Ret He in the three groups were 20.82, 25.26 and 28.1 pg, while the median values were 21, 25.1 and 27.9 pg in the three groups, respectively. In study by Torino et al the median Ret He in the control group was 35.1 pg as compared to ACD/ACD combined/IDA where the values were 29.7/26/25.2, respectively. The values in our study were consistent with the previously published results.…”

“…Several alternative markers have been proposed in recent years, of which reticulocyte hemoglobin content (CHr) and percentage of hypochromic red blood cells (%Hypo) are the most promising [8][9][10][11]. The reticulocytes last only 24 to 48 h in circulation before developing into mature red blood cells.…”
